Lower-risk driving routes in Pilanesberg

Pilanesberg is on the map for the visitors. Sun City, the park gates and the resorts around them draw a steady flow of people who do not know the roads and arrive at odd hours. The map covers the park, Sun City and the towns around the edge of it, along with the roads in from Rustenburg and from the north.

What the data looks like here

43 mapped areas across Pilanesberg.

Every area is rated three times over, once each for daytime, evening and night, because risk in South African metros does not hold still across a day. Here is how Pilanesberg’s 43 areas fall across the bands at each of those hours.

Figures read directly from the live database, not typed by hand. The lowest band means an area was checked and carries no routing penalty, which is different from an area we have no data for. No area in the country is rated worse by day than it is at night, so the night bar is also the worst case.

  • Daytime05:00 to 17:30 12%
  • Evening17:30 to 19:30 21%
  • Night19:30 to 05:00 40%

The right-hand figure is the share of Pilanesberg’s mapped areas sitting in the highest band at that hour.

  • Highest avoided by default on the strictest setting
  • Elevated always costed, avoided on the strictest setting
  • Caution costed but never avoided, since it is too widespread to route around
  • No penalty checked and carries no routing cost

Driving here

What matters on Pilanesberg’s roads

  • Almost everyone arrives on the R565 from Rustenburg or the R510 from the north, often at dusk on the way to a gate that closes. Both are mapped all the way in.
  • The roads between the park gates and the resorts are short, but they carry a lot of unfamiliar drivers late in the day. Ratings here change more between day and night than the distances suggest.
  • Inside the park the app works as a normal map. The risk data is for the public roads outside the gates.

Tsamaya rates roads and routes. It does not publish a list of neighbourhoods, and the app never labels a place for anyone other than the driver about to pass through it.

Questions

Common questions about Pilanesberg

Does Tsamaya cover the drive from Johannesburg to Sun City?

The Johannesburg, Rustenburg and Pilanesberg maps cover the start and the end of that trip and the roads on either side of the N4. The open stretches between mapped areas are driven as normal navigation.

Why is a game reserve on the map at all?

Because of the number of visitors who drive in and out of it, many of them at dusk or after dark, on roads they have never used. That is the situation the time-of-day ratings exist for.
