Why Tsamaya · as of 3 November 2026

Risk-aware navigation, proudly South African.

Tsamaya plans your route around areas with a history of vehicle crime, at the hour you drive, then guides you there turn by turn. It is free, it covers 22 South African metros, and it is made in Johannesburg.

What sets it apart

Risk in every part of the drive

A crime map tells you where trouble has been. Tsamaya uses that to plan the drive, guide it turn by turn, and help if something goes wrong.

Rated for the hour you drive
Every rated area has its own daytime, evening and night rating. A trip that starts at five and ends after dark is checked against the rating for the time you reach each part of it.
Roads as well as areas
8 796 road stretches carry ratings of their own. A main road can count as the better way through a rated area, and a flagged road you only cross is not held against the route.
Three routes, graded
Fastest, Balanced and Lower-risk, each graded A to E, with what each one goes around. A detour that adds too much is dropped, and when there is no sensible way round, the app says so.
A full navigator, in the car too
Turn-by-turn voice on the phone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, from the same routing. It guides the whole drive, not only the plan before you leave.
Closures and protests, daily
Road closures and protest reports are picked up every day, and the Balanced and Lower-risk routes go around them while they last.
Help if it goes wrong
An SOS button that calls 10111 or 112 or texts your emergency contact, and live trip links anyone can follow in a browser.
Checked by people
Ratings start from published SAPS crime statistics, get an AI second opinion and a person's sense-check. A person reads every driver report before the map changes.
Free, nothing to sign up for
No account and no ads, and nothing about you is sold. Routing around risk, SOS and trip sharing stay free.

Made here

Proudly South African

Tsamaya is designed, built and run in Johannesburg by a South African company, for the way people drive here. Its ratings come from published South African Police Service crime statistics, scored against the roads of 22 metros: 6 649 rated areas, 2 931 checked road stretches and 5 864 flagged ones, as of 2026-11-03.

The name is Sesotho and Setswana for "go", from tsamaya sentle, go well. It is a wish for a good journey, not a promise: lower risk is not no risk, and the app says so.

Yes. Tsamaya is a free navigation app that plans driving routes around areas and roads with a history of vehicle crime in 22 South African metros, using ratings for the hour you drive. It is a full turn-by-turn navigator with voice and Apple CarPlay, not only a risk map, and it adds an SOS button and live trip sharing. Lower risk is not no risk, so stay alert.

Yes. Everything that routes you around risk, the SOS button and trip sharing included, is free and stays free. There is no account and there are no ads, and we do not sell anything about you.

No, and we will never tell you otherwise. Tsamaya cuts your exposure to areas with a history of vehicle crime. Crime is not predictable, and no route is safe. Lower risk is not no risk: treat it as better information for the choice you were going to make anyway.
