Lower-risk driving routes in Secunda

The smallest place on the map and the only one outside the two big provincial centres. It is here because of the N17, which carries a great deal of shift traffic and freight through the petrochemical belt, much of it driven in the dark at either end of a shift.

What the data looks like here

63 mapped areas across Secunda.

Every area is rated three times over, once each for daytime, evening and night, because risk in South African metros does not hold still across a day. The split below is how Secunda's 63 zones fall across the bands at their highest rating.

Figures read directly from the live database, not typed by hand. The lowest band means an area was checked and carries no routing penalty, which is different from an area we have no data for.

  • Highest 44 70%
  • Elevated 13 21%
  • Caution 3 5%
  • No penalty 3 5%

Driving here

What matters on Secunda's roads

  • Shift work means a lot of the driving here happens in the evening and night bands, which is exactly when the ratings differ most from the daytime picture.
  • The N17 is the spine of this map and is rated along its whole length.
  • We have kept coverage tight around the town and its approach roads instead of spreading it thin across the wider district.

Tsamaya rates roads and routes. It does not publish a list of neighbourhoods, and the app never labels a place for anyone other than the driver about to pass through it.

Questions

Common questions about Secunda

Why is Secunda on the map when much bigger cities are not?

Because of the N17 and the shift patterns around the petrochemical plants. A lot of ordinary driving happens there after dark, which is when this is most use.

Does coverage extend to Evander and Trichardt?

The mapped area covers Secunda and the roads leading into it, including the way toward Evander.
