Lower-risk driving routes in West Rand

Roodepoort, Krugersdorp, Randfontein and the mining belt west of Johannesburg. It is a smaller map than the metros to the east and a noticeably different one, because a large share of it has been checked and rated as carrying no penalty rather than simply having nothing recorded.

What the data looks like here

158 mapped areas across West Rand.

Every area is rated three times over, once each for daytime, evening and night, because risk in South African metros does not hold still across a day. The split below is how West Rand's 158 zones fall across the bands at their highest rating.

Figures read directly from the live database, not typed by hand. The lowest band means an area was checked and carries no routing penalty, which is different from an area we have no data for.

  • Highest 56 35%
  • Elevated 39 25%
  • Caution 2 1%
  • No penalty 61 39%

What matters on West Rand's roads

  • The N14 and the R28 are the two routes most West Rand driving depends on, and both are mapped end to end.
  • Plenty of the West Rand has been checked and found to carry no penalty. That is different from having no data at all. One means we looked, the other means we have not got there yet.
  • The run into Johannesburg on the N1 and the M5 is covered the whole way, since both metros are live.

Tsamaya rates roads and routes. It does not publish a list of neighbourhoods, and the app never labels a place for anyone other than the driver about to pass through it.

Questions

Common questions about West Rand

Does Tsamaya cover Krugersdorp and Roodepoort?

Yes, both are inside the mapped West Rand area, along with Randfontein and the surrounding routes.

Why does the West Rand have fewer zones than Johannesburg?

It is smaller and less densely populated, so there is genuinely less to map. The lower count reflects the size of the place, not how well we have covered it.
