Lower-risk driving routes in Stellenbosch

The smallest map we run, and a test of whether any of this works somewhere that is not a sprawling metro. It mostly does, with one adjustment: the rated areas here are small and sit close together, so the routing has to think harder about detours that would be trivial anywhere else.

What the data looks like here

32 mapped areas across Stellenbosch.

Every area is rated three times over, once each for daytime, evening and night, because risk in South African metros does not hold still across a day. Here is how Stellenbosch’s 32 areas fall across the bands at each of those hours.

Figures read directly from the live database, not typed by hand. The lowest band means an area was checked and carries no routing penalty, which is different from an area we have no data for. No area in the country is rated worse by day than it is at night, so the night bar is also the worst case.

  • Daytime05:00 to 17:30 38%
  • Evening17:30 to 19:30 41%
  • Night19:30 to 05:00 69%

The right-hand figure is the share of Stellenbosch’s mapped areas sitting in the highest band at that hour.

  • Highest avoided by default on the strictest setting
  • Elevated always costed, avoided on the strictest setting
  • Caution costed but never avoided, since it is too widespread to route around
  • No penalty checked and carries no routing cost

Driving here

What matters on Stellenbosch’s roads

  • The R44 and R304 connect the town to the N1 and N2. Both are mapped.
  • The Stellenbosch map overlaps the edge of the Cape Town one, so a trip between them is handled as a single drive.
  • It is a small map because the town is small, not because we stopped halfway.

Tsamaya rates roads and routes. It does not publish a list of neighbourhoods, and the app never labels a place for anyone other than the driver about to pass through it.

Questions

Common questions about Stellenbosch

Does Tsamaya work for the drive between Stellenbosch and Cape Town?

Yes. Both are live and the maps join up, so it is treated as one drive rather than two.

Is a small town really worth mapping?

A lot of after-dark driving happens in a small area here, which suits time-of-day ratings well. It was also a deliberate test of whether any of this works outside the big metros.
