Show
  1. 23 September 2026

    • Feature

From place to plan in one tap

Pick a place from search, a suggestion card, Home, Work or a pin and Tsamaya starts planning straight away, with no Go button to press first. Empty search now shows Home, Work and your saved places, and the result distance sits on the right so more results fit above the keyboard.

    • Fix

The route details agree with the card

When the options merged into one card, the card could count a high-risk area that the list below never named. Every area the card counts is now listed, with the kilometres driven through it. After a drive, the summary describes the part you actually drove, and a drive ended before it started no longer asks for a rating.

    • Feature

      A clearer SOS

SOS now opens a sheet with a large Call 10111 button first, then Call 112 (which works from any cellphone), then alerting your emergency contact. Sharing your live location shows a Live link on pill with a one-tap Stop, and Share and Navigation settings now sit together under More.

    • Tweak

      A calmer drive screen

The coloured screen border flashes a few times as you enter a higher-risk area and then holds its colour instead of pulsing the whole way. Shop and hotspot labels are hidden while you drive, speed camera and hotspot alerts also show on screen with the distance, and the road pill names a high-risk area even when the road itself is rated lower.

    • Tweak

      Undo a report

A report tapped during a drive now waits a few seconds with an Undo button before it is sent, on the phone and on the car screen.

    • Fix

Android Auto says what each route passes

The car's route list now says what each option passes, the same words as the phone, with its A to E grade. Ending a route shows Resume for a few seconds, and the navigation notification clears when you unplug.

    • Tweak

      One way of naming risk

High, medium and low-risk areas are now called the same thing everywhere: the map legend, route cards, the drive screen, the car and the trip summary. Settings are shorter too, with the detail one tap away under More about this.

    • Fix

      No repeating location pop-up

With the phone's location switched off, Google's location prompt no longer comes back every few seconds. Tsamaya asks once when you tap Go, and the home screen says what is wrong and opens the right setting.

  2. 22 September 2026

    • Fix

A stretch now covers both directions

Where a road is mapped as two carriageways, a stretch you rate now covers both directions: the other carriageway is marked with it and the review applies both together. Before, only the side you tapped changed, so half the road kept its old colour. A Both-directions switch on the rating panel turns it off for a one-way change.

  3. 22 September 2026

    • Feature

Rate just a stretch of a road

Tap a flagged road and choose Suggest an update, and you can now say whether you mean the whole road or just a stretch of it. For a stretch, tap where it starts and where it ends along the road and the part between fills in, so one risky block no longer has to be reported against the entire road. A stretch can be rated Safe as well as Caution, Risky or High risk. The same choice appears when you tap a road on a route's list.

  4. 22 September 2026

    • Tweak

Choose how long a saved trip is reused

Settings › Routes › Saved trips now lets you pick when a remembered trip gets a fresh check regardless of changes: after a week (the default), after a month, or only when the risk data, your allowed roads, a nearby closure or the app changes.

  5. 22 September 2026

    • Feature

      Your usual trips start faster

Tsamaya now remembers the route options it worked out for trips to your saved places, for the time of day you drove them. The next time you tap Go to Home or Work from the same spot, the options appear straight away with a fresh traffic estimate, on the phone and on the car screen. It re-checks the route automatically when the risk data changes, after a week, or if a temporary closure near it starts or ends.

  6. 22 September 2026

    • Feature

Mark a road with two taps

In Suggest a map edit, choose Road and tap where a stretch starts and where it ends. The road between your taps now fills in by itself, so you no longer trace it point by point. Tap further along to extend the stretch, and Undo takes back the last tap.

  7. 22 September 2026

    • Fix

Road name clears the arrival bar on the CarPlay dashboard

On the CarPlay dashboard's mini map, the road name and safety label under your car now sit on one line and shrink to fit above Apple's arrival-time bar instead of running behind it (on the smallest screens, most of the way). Your car stays exactly where it was.

  8. 19 September 2026

    • Fix

Car screen shows your route much sooner

On CarPlay and Android Auto, choosing a destination now shows the Fastest route within a few seconds, with the lower-risk options filling in behind it. On a long trip the risk check used to take well over a minute with nothing but a spinner. If you press Go before it finishes and a lower-risk route turns up, the car offers a one-tap Switch.

  9. 19 September 2026

    • Fix

Search keeps working on a busy day

Destination search now has a daily limit with Google. If the limit is reached, search switches to the map's own place search instead of showing an error, and goes back to Google within the hour. The Nearby buttons say when they are busy rather than asking you to check your connection.

  10. 19 September 2026

    • Tweak

Previous overlays appear as soon as the map does

After an update the previous risk overlays now go onto the map the moment it opens, rather than after the risk data has loaded and been re-cut, which on older phones was about fourteen seconds. The refreshed overlays still replace them when ready.

  11. 19 September 2026

    • Feature

Route planning in about half the time

The Balanced and Lower-risk options used to be searched for separately, each scoring the same candidate routes against the same risk areas. They now share one search and each option still decides by its own rule, so the Fastest, Balanced and Lower-risk choices are exactly what they were, in about half the time and with fewer map requests. On older Android phones a long trip that took a minute and a half to finish planning should now take under a minute.

  12. 19 September 2026

    • Fix

Previous overlays really do show after an update

The earlier fix for the bare map after an update was undone by its own first pass: the app built an empty overlay before the risk data had loaded and threw the previous one away. It now waits for real data before writing anything, so the previous overlays stay on the map until the new ones are ready.

  13. 19 September 2026

    • Fix

The route screen opens as soon as the fastest route is in

Tapping Go used to show "Finding route…" for as long as the first round of safety scoring took, and on older Android phones taps were ignored while the lower-risk search ran. The planner now lets the screen draw between scoring steps whenever the app is on screen, so the fastest route appears as soon as it downloads and the screen stays responsive while the safer options are found.

    • Tweak

No blank map after an update

The first launch after an app update rebuilds the risk overlays for the new version. The map now shows the previous overlays straight away and swaps them in when the rebuild finishes, instead of leaving the map bare for half a minute.

  14. 19 September 2026

    • Fix

Route overview: risk areas and roads draw at once

The route overview screen was rebuilding its risk overlays from scratch on every step of the lower-risk search, so on older Android phones the zones and roads took seconds to appear and taps waited behind that work. It now reads the same overlay files the home map keeps on the phone.

  15. 19 September 2026

    • Fix

Android: the home screen answers taps at once

On Android phones the home screen was quietly redrawing itself sixty times a second, all the time, because of the frosted-glass effect behind its buttons and a blinking dot in the area pill. On a Samsung S21 that kept the phone busy nine tenths of the time and every tap landed a beat late. The glass on the home screen is now a plain tint on Android and the dot no longer blinks, so the screen sits idle until you touch it.

    • Fix

Risk areas come back with the map, not eight seconds later

After a drive, or after changing the Map detail setting, the home map came back blank and the risk areas and roads took about eight seconds to reappear while the app rebuilt them from scratch. The overlays are now kept on the phone as files the map reads directly, so they survive a drive and a restart, and the map now tells the app when it has finished drawing instead of the app waiting out a timer.

    • Tweak

Settings does less work when it opens

Settings no longer starts its own second GPS listener, no longer lists the installed voices until you open the Navigation page, and only refreshes the review-team badges once a minute. The home map also stops re-serialising its markers and pins every time your position updates.

  16. 18 September 2026

    • Fix

Android Auto: the turn card appears much sooner after Go

Tapping Go on the car screen used to take about ten seconds before the first turn card appeared. Nine of those seconds were spent checking every road segment near the route against the whole route, one sample at a time. That check now skips segments the route cannot touch, so guidance starts within a few seconds.

  17. 18 September 2026

    • Fix

Car screen: measuring the pause after Go

On Android Auto the first turn card can take about ten seconds to appear after you tap Go. This update times each step of that pause so the next drive log shows exactly where it goes, and lets a staff phone stream its drive log to a connected computer.

  18. 18 September 2026

    • Feature

      Faster, smoother start on Android

Opening Tsamaya used to freeze the screen for about five seconds on Android while the risk data loaded and the zone map was prepared, so early taps did nothing. That work now runs in small steps, the prepared zone map is kept on the phone between launches, and the map receives its overlays ready-made, so the home screen answers taps straight away.

  19. 18 September 2026

    • Fix

Android Auto: "Hey Google, end the route" now ends it

The assistant sends a Google Maps-style command when you ask it to stop, and Tsamaya was reading it as a place to search for. It now recognises the command and ends the drive. "Show traffic" and "alternate route" requests are also recognised (and no longer searched for), though the map already shows traffic and the route picker is where alternatives live.

    • Feature

Speed camera and hotspot warnings without a route

In free drive on the car screen (and the phone), Tsamaya now warns about fixed speed cameras and hijacking or smash-and-grab hotspots coming up on the road you are driving, using your direction of travel. Before, these only worked while navigating.

    • Tweak

Road name updates faster after a turn

In free drive, turning onto a new road restarts the road-matching trail, so the road readout names the new road in a second or two instead of after a stretch of the old one.

    • Tweak

Android Auto: the car sits in the centre while navigating

The map used to push the car to the right of the visible area during a drive and back to the centre once it ended. It now stays centred in the space beside the turn card, in both states.

    • Fix

No "watch for anyone following you" after ending a drive

After you ended navigation, the arrival reminder could still play as you reached the destination you had cancelled. It now only plays during a drive.

    • Tweak

Android Auto: smoother first seconds after Go

The phone screen now waits a few seconds after the car has started guiding before it opens, so the car map and the first spoken instruction are not held up by it.

  20. 18 September 2026

    • Fix

Android: no more crash when an update reloads the app

Tapping Reload on "Update ready" could close Tsamaya a few seconds later on Android, because the map was still tracking your position while the app restarted. The map now stops tracking first, then the app reloads.

  21. 18 September 2026

    • Fix

This card now closes the moment you tap it

After an update, this card now appears before the map starts loading, so its button answers straight away. On Android a tap here could take several seconds to register while the map and risk data were loading underneath. They now load once you close the card.

    • Fix

Android Auto: risk border on the edge of the map card

When Tsamaya shares the car screen with another app, the coloured risk border now runs along the edge of the map card instead of floating inside it with map showing around it.

  22. 17 September 2026

    • Feature

New hijacking hotspot: Winnie Mandela Drive and Uranium Road

The Witkoppen intersection of Winnie Mandela Drive and Uranium Road, in Fourways, is now marked as a hijacking hotspot after community reports of attempted hijackings there, mostly in the evening. You will see it on the map and hear a heads-up when your drive goes through it. Hotspots are awareness only and never change your route.

  23. 17 September 2026

    • Feature

CarPlay: the night map follows your car

Version 1.5.2. With Map look set to Auto, the CarPlay map now switches to the night map when the car itself switches to its dark map appearance, the way Android Auto already does. A look pinned to Day or Dark still wins.

    • Feature

Android Auto: next turn shown over other car apps

When another app, like your music, is full screen on Android Auto, the next turn now appears in the small navigation card at the bottom of the car screen. A turn notification that could stay stuck on your phone after a drive is now cleared too.

    • Tweak

Clearer crash reports on both phones

On Android, a serious error mid-drive now closes the app cleanly with a report instead of leaving a blank screen. On iPhone, crash reports now point to the exact line of code, so causes are found faster.

  24. 17 September 2026

    • Fix

      One traffic warning, not several

When there is heavy traffic ahead, you now hear it once, with the total delay added up. It used to be repeated for each slow stretch, again when the phone screen was open too, and again after every change of route.

    • Fix

Faster routes on the car screen

Planning a trip from CarPlay or Android Auto, by voice or from search, now works out the route options together instead of one after the other, and stops asking for the same directions twice.

    • Feature

Android Auto: Report and Settings buttons

The Android Auto map now has its own Report and Settings buttons at the top, so you can report an incident without a route and reach Settings without going through Search. While driving, Settings sits next to Search.

    • Fix

Ending a drive by voice understands more ways of asking

Asking your car's assistant to end the route now works with more ways of saying it, like "can you end the route" or "stop navigating to Rosebank Mall".

    • Fix

Green roads now say "Lower risk"

Verified roads are labelled "Lower risk" instead of "No known risk". A green road crossed by a bridge also stays green now: a road on the bridge could colour a short stretch underneath it, like the M1 under Grayston Drive.

    • Fix

Trip rating stays on screen on Android

After ending a drive, the "How was your trip?" card could vanish straight away on some Android phones. It now stays until you answer it or leave the app. A notification the Android Auto connection could leave stuck on your phone is also cleared.

  25. 16 September 2026

    • Fix

Car screen: Settings keeps track of Back

Leaving Settings with the car screen's own Back button is now recorded properly, so the drive log no longer shows a second Settings screen that was never open, and the one-time Home and Work tip on the car can appear again.

  26. 16 September 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay: day maps in the daytime

With Map look on Auto, the car screen could show the night map in broad daylight: CarPlay reports a dark screen style all day, and on Lite detail a phone in dark mode darkened the car map too. The car map now follows the time of day and your Map look choice. Android Auto still switches to night maps when the car does.

  27. 16 September 2026

    • Fix

Old "App closed unexpectedly" warnings cleared

A red warning left over from before the last update no longer stays in Settings. It now only appears for a crash the current rules actually find.

  28. 16 September 2026

    • Fix

Android: the natural voice speaks again

On Android phones the Google natural voice went quiet after the first spoken line of a drive, in the car and out of it. The app switched its own audio off after each prompt and Android never switched it back. It stays on now, and if a line ever fails to start within two seconds the on-device voice reads it instead.

    • Fix

CarPlay: the mini map stays up

When the phone runs short of memory, the CarPlay dashboard map used to go black for up to two minutes. It is now the last thing given up: the phone's own maps drop their imagery and 3D first, and the dashboard map is never dark for more than about eight seconds. On the satellite basemap the mini map draws its roads and the route on top of the imagery again, and the End route button clears once a route has ended.

    • Feature

      Settings on the car screen

CarPlay and Android Auto now have a Settings grid: Sound, Alerts, Basemap, Map look, Route and Detail, each showing its current value. Open it from Settings on the car screen or from the "Where to?" list, with or without a route running, so you can mute guidance or switch to satellite without picking up the phone.

    • Tweak

Speed warnings: one chime, then five minutes of peace

The over-speed chime used to repeat every 30 seconds for as long as you stayed over. It now sounds once, reminds you after five minutes if you are still over, and sounds again straight away if the posted limit drops below the speed you are doing.

    • Fix

A side road no longer borrows the highway's green

Village Road runs directly under the M2, and the road readout kept calling it verified safe long after you had left the highway. A safe road now has to plausibly be the road under the car, by name or by being within 8 metres of its centreline, before it counts.

    • Fix

Risk data downloads only when it changes

Android could never save the risk data between launches (it is bigger than the space the phone's key-value store allows), so every start downloaded all 29 MB again. It is saved to a file now, and when something changes only the changed rows are fetched.

    • Fix

Android Auto: new route preview, spoken stop, risk border

Asking for a new destination mid-drive now previews the new route, not the one you are on. Telling the assistant to end navigation ends it instead of offering to drive to a street called End. The risk border frames the map you can see: along the screen edges in full screen, around the card in split view.

    • Tweak

"App closed unexpectedly" only for real crashes

The red row in Settings no longer appears when the phone simply closed Tsamaya in the background hours after you last used it.

  29. 15 September 2026

    • Fix

A tidier "What's New" after the next app update

When you install the next version of Tsamaya from the store, the "What's New" card shows you that release only, instead of paging back through everything that came before it.

  30. 13 September 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay: a crash when closing route options is fixed

Version 1.5.1. Closing the route options on the car screen could crash Tsamaya, because two parts of the app changed the car's buttons at the same moment. They now take turns.

    • Tweak

      Clearer crash reports on Android

When Tsamaya crashes on an Android phone, more of the report we receive now names the code involved instead of showing bare memory addresses, which makes the cause quicker to find.

  31. 13 September 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay: the buttons come back when you tap the map

With no route running, CarPlay hides the map buttons a few seconds after they appear. Once hidden, no tap would bring them back until you left Tsamaya and opened it again. There is now a Search button at the top of the car screen, and a tap on the map shows everything again every time.

    • Fix

      CarPlay: faster start after Go

Pressing Go on the car screen left a "Loading" card up for four seconds or more while the phone got its own directions screen ready. The car now goes first: the first turn shows in about two seconds, with the right arrival time and distance for the whole trip from the start.

    • Fix

CarPlay: a steadier map and clearer route cards

The map no longer slides sideways every time the car screen shows or hides its buttons. The route options card names your destination (not the last road) and no longer repeats the same line twice. The phone and the car now agree on the arrival time. The speedometer stays clear of the map credits, the report buttons all have coloured icons, and the route preview and map exploration now show where your car is.

  32. 13 September 2026

    • Tweak

A turn reminder at 1.5 kilometres

On stretches where the directions went quiet between the first mention of a turn and the last 400 metres, you now also hear the turn named about 1.5 kilometres out, so it never comes as a surprise.

    • Feature

Android Auto: keep guiding on your phone after unplugging

If you unplug from Android Auto in the middle of a drive while Tsamaya is not open on your phone, a quiet notification now waits on your phone. Tap it and your phone picks up the same route. If Tsamaya is open but not showing directions, it asks whether to keep guiding instead. If it is already guiding on your phone, it simply carries on. Unplugging when you have parked at a stop or your destination shows nothing.

  33. 12 September 2026

    • Fix

Searching a chain now finds the branch nearest you

Typing "KFC" could list five branches five kilometres away and leave out the one two kilometres up the road. Searches like that (a shop or restaurant with several branches near you) now show a "Nearest" group at the top, closest first, with the distance on each. Searching a specific place by name is unchanged.

    • Feature

See all your search results on the map

Search for something, and the results list now has "Show all on map". It drops a pin on every result and brings up a list you can drag open over the map. Tap a pin to see which one it is, tap a row to find it on the map, and Go sets it as your destination. Your own position stays in view so you can tell which one is actually on your way.

    • Fix

Roads are visible on the satellite map

On the satellite basemap the streets faded out as you zoomed in, until street names were floating over the photos with no road under them. Roads are now drawn with an outline over the aerial imagery at every zoom, on the phone map, the driving map and the car screens. Risk areas and route lines still draw on top.

  34. 12 September 2026

    • Feature

Camera tilt is now a slider, with notches

Settings › Navigation › Camera tilt is a slider instead of three buttons. The three familiar angles (Low, the Google Maps look; Standard; Steep) sit as notches you can tap or slide onto, and anything in between works too. The car screen and the dashboard tile follow the same angle in proportion. Your saved choice carries over.

    • Feature

Preview the driving view before you drive

Under Camera tilt and under Map zoom there is a Preview drop-down that shows a real map frame at the exact zoom and tilt you have set, with the car where it will sit on screen. It updates as you move either slider and costs nothing while it is closed.

    • Fix

Sliders no longer lose the page

Dragging the car-marker size, Map zoom, Camera tilt or voice volume slider used to scroll the whole settings page if your finger drifted up or down, and the slider stopped responding until you let go. The slider now keeps the gesture for as long as your finger is down; the page scrolls normally again the moment you release.

  35. 12 September 2026

    • Feature

Map zoom: a slider, a wider default, and more room at speed

The driving map now starts about 15% further out than before, and pulls back further as your speed climbs so you see more of the road ahead on the open road. Settings › Navigation has a new Map zoom slider if you want it closer or further; it takes effect on the next camera move, even mid-drive. Same on CarPlay, Android Auto and the phone.

    • Fix

Your own car marker: a smoother size slider

Dragging the marker-size slider used to judder, because each move was measured against the thumb it was moving. It now tracks your finger. The range is 25% to 150% instead of up to 250%, so the sizes people actually use sit in the middle of the track. A saved size above the new maximum is trimmed to fit.

    • Fix

CarPlay: Satellite from the first frame, and 3D at night

Starting a drive from the car with the phone in your pocket showed the night map in broad daylight until you unlocked the phone, at which point it flipped to Satellite. The car screen now reads your map choice itself. With Full map detail on, the night map keeps its 3D buildings, as the phone already did.

    • Fix

Android Auto: a stray "navigate to" no longer takes over your drive

Words the car heard as a destination were geocoded and re-planned over your live route, dropping you onto the route picker mid-drive. If a spoken destination arrives while you are already driving, the car now asks "Drive to X instead?" and keeps your route unless you say so. A destination you pick yourself still plans at once.

    • Fix

Android Auto: the warning border fits the small card

In the split-screen card, the left edge of the safety border was drawn off the card and the right edge was mostly hidden. The border now traces the card you can actually see. CarPlay is unchanged.

    • Fix

Speed limit: no more blink through short gaps in the map data

On roads like Old Pretoria Main Road the limit vanished for a few seconds and came back, because a short stretch of the road has no speed-limit tag in OpenStreetMap. The last limit read on that road is now held through a gap of up to 1.5 km. A held limit is never used for the over-speed chime, and nothing is shown where no limit was ever read.

    • Tweak

CarPlay dashboard: the mini-map looks down at the junction too

The small dashboard map now flattens to a top-down view as a turn comes up, the same way the main car map and the phone do, then leans back once you are through.

    • Fix

CarPlay: the Mapbox logo is in the top-right corner again

On Satellite, the map logo and the (i) button sat in the top centre of the screen, and were pushed off the map entirely while a turn card was up. They now sit in the top-right corner of the visible map.

    • Tweak

Sending a drive log is for any odd drive, not only a crash

Settings › Help & About now invites you to send the log after anything unexpected: a route that failed or looked wrong, a freeze, or CarPlay and Android Auto misbehaving. It covers the last 24 hours, so send it soon after the drive.

  36. 12 September 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay: the route picker names each route again

On CarPlay, choosing between routes showed the destination at the top of every page and nothing else, so "Lower-risk", "Balanced" and "Fastest" all looked identical and you were picking between two sets of numbers. The options are now listed by name, with what each one avoids underneath, the way they already were on Android Auto.

  37. 11 September 2026

    • Fix

Car screens: the route picker names the option again

When choosing between routes on Android Auto, the card printed the same sentence twice and never said which option you were looking at, so "Lower-risk", "Balanced" and "Fastest" were indistinguishable. With a longer description it also pushed the arrival time and distance off the card. The option name is back at the top, with the trade-off underneath.

    • Fix

Car screens: the arrival time fits on the route card again

When every route option came back with the same road, the card listed all three names, which wrapped onto a second line and pushed the journey time and distance off the bottom. It now says "All options", which means the same thing in one line.

    • Fix

Car screens: two buttons that were blank squares

On Android Auto the "more report types" button and the search button during a drive were drawn as empty white squares with no icon in them. Both now show their proper symbol. The blank one on the report screen was the only way to reach five of the report types, so it was worth more than it looked.

    • Fix

Car screens notice when you allow location

Following on from the message added earlier today: if you allowed location from your phone's own Settings rather than from inside Tsamaya, the car screen kept saying it still needed access until you next opened the app. It now picks up the change on its own, within a few seconds.

  39. 11 September 2026

    • Fix

Android Auto: asking for a place by voice now works

Saying "navigate to Sandton City" in the car did nothing at all. The car passes us the spoken place as text rather than as a point on the map, and the app was only set up to handle the point, so every spoken destination was quietly dropped. Spoken places are now looked up the same way the search bar looks them up, biased to where you actually are, and the destination comes up ready for you to pick a route. Asking for a set of coordinates works too.

    • Fix

Car screens now tell you why the map is empty

If the app had not been given permission to use your location, or was still finding you, the car screen just showed a map with no car on it and nothing explaining why. It now says what is wrong: either that it needs location access, which only your phone can give it, or simply that it is still finding you. The first one asks you to sort it out on your phone when it is safe to do so, never while you are driving.

  40. 11 September 2026

    • Fix

The map goes to the place you searched for

Picking a place from the search screen set it as your destination but left the map sitting wherever it already was, so you never saw where you were about to drive to. The map now moves to the place you chose, and it checks that it actually got there rather than assuming so. If you start moving the map yourself it leaves it alone.

    • Fix

The risk glow is back on the night map

The red and amber glow around the edge of the screen, the one that tells you at a glance that you are in a higher-risk area, was quietly switched off whenever the driving map was in its night look. That meant it was missing for every drive after 17:30, on the Lite map setting, and any time you pinned the map to Dusk or Night: the hours it matters most. It now follows only its own switch in Settings, and nothing else can turn it off.

    • Tweak

Route options are easier to tell apart

On the route screen the lines were thin, in the same colours as the risk areas underneath them, and no thicker than the flagged roads they crossed, so picking one out was hard work. Each route now has a dark outline around it, the one you have selected is drawn heavier and always on top, the risk-area shading is lighter with a firmer edge, and flagged roads are drawn more quietly. Nothing about the routes themselves has changed, only how clearly you can see them.

    • Tweak

Car screens: a thinner route, and no duplicate on your phone

On CarPlay and Android Auto the route line was drawn at its full driving thickness even in the zoomed-out overview, where it covered the junctions and risk areas the overview exists to show. It now thins out as the map zooms out and is unchanged while you are driving. Your phone also stops showing its own Lock Screen and Dynamic Island card while a car screen is connected, since the car is already showing the same turn, arrival time and risk. Unplug mid-drive and the card comes straight back.

    • Tweak

The "Roads on route" panel is smaller and better placed

It sat floating in the middle-left of the driving screen and took up more room than it needed, noticeably so on Android. It is now a compact pill tucked under the speed dial, lined up with the buttons beside it, and the two phone types size it the same way.

  41. 11 September 2026

    • Fix

Lower-risk always wears the best badge

The A to E safety letter could still put Balanced above Lower-risk, because any route touching a high-risk area is held at D no matter how little of it there is: a Lower-risk line with 100 m of red read D under a Balanced line with none reading C. The options are now ranked by the letter you see as well as the risk behind it, so the option named Lower-risk can never wear a worse badge than the one below it. And where every option touches a high-risk area and the letter could not separate them, the ones carrying at least twice the risk of Lower-risk now move down to E instead of sharing its D: on a Kempton Park to Waterfall run, Lower-risk with 80 m of red and Fastest with 5.5 km of red used to both read D.

  42. 10 September 2026

    • Fix

Go always starts from where you are

With the starting point set to My location, Go now asks the phone where you are at the moment you press it. Until now the app used the position it had been given when it started up, which it was never told to update: open the app at home, drive somewhere, press Go, and the route was planned from your driveway. The map, the centre-on-me button and nearby search were reading the same stale position, and they now keep up too. A starting point you chose yourself is still used exactly as you set it.

  43. 10 September 2026

    • Fix

Lower-risk is never the riskier option

The three route options are worked out by three separate searches, and nothing used to compare their answers. On a handful of Kempton Park trips that meant the option named Lower-risk came back through MORE high-risk ground than Balanced, and further and slower with it: on one Edleen run it passed five high-risk areas against Balanced's two, for 7 km and 3 minutes more driving. Now an option that is not genuinely safer than the one above it is shown as the same route rather than offered as a worse one under a safer name, so the list always gets safer as you read down it. Where the options really do differ, nothing changes.

  44. 10 September 2026

    • Fix

Closing a road-closure map no longer traps you

In the road closures review screen, "See it on the map" left no way back: the close button was being laid out underneath the details panel at the bottom, off screen. It now sits at the top left of the map, and on Android the back button closes the map instead of leaving the screen.

  45. 9 September 2026

    • Fix

Camera tilt the right way round

Low now means a low camera that leans over the road ahead, the Google Maps look, and Steep means a steep camera looking down, closer to top-down. The first version had the two swapped. Your saved choice stays as it is, so if you picked Low wanting the leaning view you now have it.

    • Fix

Android: room for the navigation buttons

On an Android phone using the three-button navigation bar, buttons and sheets at the bottom of the screen sat under the bar: the onboarding Skip link, the end of Settings, and every pop-up sheet. Everything bottom-anchored now clears the bar. Gesture navigation and iPhone are unchanged.

    • Tweak

Fresh installs start on the latest version

A new install now fetches the latest update on its first launch, before the welcome screens, instead of running the version that shipped with the store build until the second launch. Existing installs keep the one-tap "Update ready" offer.

    • Fix

      First taps land on Android

On a first launch the home map and its risk data were being built underneath the welcome screens, which stalled the app for a few seconds at a time and made taps on Next and Skip look ignored. The home screen now loads only once you reach it. Tapping the highlighted control during the home-screen tour also moves the tour on now.

    • Tweak

3D buildings on the evening drive

After 17:30 the driving map uses the high-contrast night style. On the Balanced and High map-detail tiers it now draws 3D buildings over that map, as the home screen already did, instead of going flat for the drive.

    • Fix

CarPlay mini map keeps up at low speed

In free drive the dashboard mini map turned only after the car had covered 25 metres, so a slow corner showed the car facing the wrong way for several seconds, and the position itself moved in steps. It now follows the phone's held heading on every fix, and location updates arrive continuously instead of every 5 metres.

    • Tweak

Satellite credits on the mini map

On the CarPlay dashboard tile with the satellite basemap, the Mapbox mark was hidden in the bottom-left corner and the attribution "i" stood beside the road pill. Both now sit in the top corner opposite the speed dial, as on the full car map.

    • Fix

Day / Eve / Ngt flag on narrow screens

The time-of-day flag next to the city name on the home screen was clipped off on narrower phones. The city name now truncates instead and the flag always shows.

  46. 8 September 2026

    • Feature

      Top-down view at turns

As a turn comes up, about 250 metres out or ten seconds away at speed, the map now tilts to a top-down view of the junction so you can see its shape clearly, then leans back to your camera tilt once you are through. It is on by default, on the phone and on a car screen, and lives under Settings › Navigation › Junction view.

    • Tweak

Satellite map credits moved out of the way

On a car screen with the satellite basemap, the Mapbox mark and the imagery credit sat at the bottom, where the car's own bar and the road pill covered them. They now sit in the top corner away from the speedo. They stay on for satellite because the aerial imagery is licensed and must be credited.

  47. 8 September 2026

    • Tweak

      See the risk data download

When the app fetches new risk data, a small pill on the map now shows the download as a percentage, both on a fresh install and whenever a change has been published. The built-in snapshot keeps the map and routing working while it lands, so nothing waits on it.

  48. 8 September 2026

    • Feature

      Gqeberha is on the map

The whole of Nelson Mandela Bay is now covered: Gqeberha itself from the beachfront to the Northern Areas, the townships of Motherwell, KwaZakhele, New Brighton and Zwide, Kariega and Despatch in the west, and the coast from Colchester round to Cape Recife. Every suburb and the main roads between them have been rated against SAPS data for the police stations that serve them, then checked a second time, and your location is now trusted anywhere in the metro.

    • Feature

      Places to discover in Gqeberha

Ten tappable places join the map: the Boardwalk, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Hobie Beach, Kings Beach, Bayworld, St George's Park, the Donkin Reserve, Cape Recife, Baywest Mall and Kragga Kamma. Tap one for a short description and a read on the area around it.

  49. 8 September 2026

    • Feature

Choose how far the map leans

Settings › Navigation › Camera tilt sets the angle of the driving view: Low is closer to top-down, the way Google Maps sits; Standard is the angle Tsamaya has always used; Steep leans further over the road ahead. It applies to the phone and to the map on a car screen.

    • Feature

Re-centre after dragging the car map

Drag the map on a car screen and a re-centre button now appears so you can get back to the car with one tap. Before, the map only came back on its own once the car moved, so sitting in traffic left it wherever you had dragged it.

    • Fix

The map stays facing your direction when you stop

Standing still in traffic used to turn the map north-up, and crawling under a bridge could spin it. The map now holds the direction you were last travelling in until you are properly moving again.

    • Fix

The right road name in slow traffic

In stop-go traffic the road pill could name the highway you were driving over instead of the road you were on: "M1" on the bridge above the M1. Road matching now keeps working at crawling speed, and the nearest-address lookup no longer talks over it.

    • Fix

Android Auto split view lines up on connect

On Android Auto the map could open laid out for the whole screen while showing in the split card, with the car marker cut off at the card's edge until you opened the full map and came back. The card's layout is now picked up the moment it connects.

  50. 7 September 2026

    • Tweak

Risk areas rebalanced on the satellite, night and day maps

The low-risk yellow areas were drawn heavier than orange and red, which on the satellite basemap read as a solid wash you could not see the ground through, and on the night map made the lowest-risk suburbs the most prominent thing on the screen. Yellow now sits a touch lighter than the other two bands on both. On the day map all three bands are a little stronger than before, so orange and yellow no longer disappear into the background while red stays clearly the strongest.

  51. 7 September 2026

    • Feature

Route grades that tell the options apart

The A to E grade on each route option used to top out at one kilometre of high-risk road, so on most real trips every option read E and the badge said nothing about which one to take. The scale now runs much wider at the top, and when one option carries half the risk of another they can no longer share a letter. A route that touches a high-risk area still never reads better than D.

    • Fix

CarPlay turn card stops re-animating between zones

On CarPlay the next-turn card slid in again every time the car crossed into a new risk area, sometimes dozens of times on one road, as if a new turn were coming up. The card's colour now reflects the risk at the turn itself rather than wherever the car happens to be, so it only moves when the turn does.

    • Feature

How much less risk, in words

Each route option can now say how it compares to the fastest one, for example "62% less risk than the fastest route", or "more risk" when that is the honest answer. It is on by default and can be switched off under Settings › Routes › Route cards if it is one line too many.

  52. 7 September 2026

    • Feature

Night map when your car's lights come on

On CarPlay and Android Auto the map now switches to the night look whenever the car reports its lights are on, and back to the daytime map when they go off, the way Google Maps does. This applies with Map lighting on Auto; a lighting you have pinned in Settings still wins.

    • Tweak

      Satellite on the dashboard mini-map

If you have chosen the satellite basemap, the small map on the CarPlay dashboard now shows it too, not just the full-screen car map.

  53. 6 September 2026

    • Feature

Offline maps that tell you the size

Settings › Places › Offline maps now shows how much an area will cost before you download it: about how many megabytes, and how many kilometres across. Every downloaded area reports its real size instead of 0 MB. A new choice, Roads & names or Full detail, lets you keep a whole metro on your phone in a fraction of the space: Roads & names holds every road, street name and suburb, which is the map you need to drive, while Full detail adds building outlines and minor places at several times the size. Areas that overlap share what they have in common, so downloading the same place twice costs nothing extra.

    • Fix

      Downloads that finish

An offline download that was interrupted, by the app closing or the signal dropping, keeps what it saved and shows as Paused with a Resume button, so it carries on from where it stopped when you choose, on Wi-Fi if you prefer. Framing an area larger than your phone can store is refused up front, with the numbers, instead of failing part-way. A second area started straight after a first no longer reports a false failure.

  54. 6 September 2026

    • Feature

      Durban is on the map

The whole of eThekwini is now covered, from Umkomaas in the south through the city, Umlazi, Pinetown, Phoenix and Inanda to Umhlanga, Tongaat and King Shaka airport in the north. Every suburb and the main roads between them have been rated against SAPS data for the police stations that serve them, then checked a second time, so routes into and around Durban avoid the areas and roads that carry the most risk at the time you are driving. Your location is now trusted anywhere in the metro, so trips start from where you are rather than a default point.

    • Feature

      Places to discover in Durban

Ten tappable places join the map in Durban, the way the other areas already have them: uShaka Marine World, Moses Mabhida Stadium, the Golden Mile at North Beach, the Botanic Gardens, Suncoast, the Victoria Street Market, Gateway, the Umhlanga lighthouse, King Shaka airport and the Kenneth Stainbank reserve. Tap one for a short description and a read on the area around it.

    • Tweak

      Speed cameras around Durban

Known fixed camera positions on the N2, N3, M7 and Umhlanga Rocks Drive have been added, so you get the same heads-up in Durban that you already get elsewhere. As always this is the list of cameras we know about, not a complete one.

  55. 5 September 2026

    • Feature

      Settings, reorganised

Settings now opens on a page of category cards (Routes, Map, Navigation, Alerts, Places, Customise, Sharing & privacy, Help & About), each one showing what it is currently set to, so you can see how the app is set up at a glance. Every category has its own colour, which carries through its whole page, and the old catch-all Navigation tab has been split so the map, the voice, the warnings and the look of the app each have a home of their own. Nothing was removed and no setting changed its value.

    • Feature

      Search your settings

A search box at the top of Settings finds any setting by name or by what it does (type "hijacking", "satellite", "emergency" or "volume"), and tapping a result opens the right page, scrolls to that setting and highlights it for a moment.

  56. 4 September 2026

    • Fix

Android Auto: the map no longer opens shoved to the left

When the car screen shows the map in a split card next to another app, the app could apply screen margins that belonged to the previous, full-width layout and put the car marker, the camera and the road name at the card's left edge until something on the screen changed. Margins that cannot belong to the current card are now ignored.

    • Fix

Android Auto: the road name no longer sits on the car

On short car screens the road-name pill could overlap the car marker, and in navigation cover it entirely under the turn card and ETA bar. It now keeps clear of the marker, switching to a one-line layout when the screen is too short for the stacked one, and it is no longer clipped on its left edge.

    • Fix

Android Auto: a reroute no longer ends the trip

The car could tell the app to stop navigating a second or two after a reroute, ending the trip with nobody touching anything. A reroute no longer restarts the car's navigation session, and a stop request that arrives within a few seconds of the app starting a session or updating it after a reroute is treated as an echo of that action, at most twice per trip. A real "stop navigation" is still honoured. If the car ends a trip mid-drive for another reason, the app now records exactly when, and what it had just done, so it can be traced.

  57. 4 September 2026

    • Fix

Guidance no longer jumps ahead where your route crosses itself

Where a route goes over a bridge and later comes back under it (or out along one carriageway and back on the other), the app could place you on the later stretch the moment you crossed the earlier one, skip several kilometres of the drive, and then hold you there with the next turn drifting further away. Your position is now matched to where a moving car could actually have got to since the last fix, and to the direction you are travelling, so the guidance stays on the road you are on. If it ever does lose you, it re-plans from your real position, usually within half a minute, instead of never.

    • Feature

Satellite view on CarPlay and Android Auto

If Basemap is set to Satellite in Settings › Navigation, the full-screen car map now uses it too. The dashboard mini-map keeps the normal map, since aerial tiles are the heaviest thing a map can hold and that tile is the one the car unit is most likely to squeeze for memory.

    • Tweak

      Car-screen speedo is always dark

The speed dial on the car screen used to follow the light or dark look, which put a white dial on the pale daytime map. It is now a dark dial with white numbers whatever the map, so it reads at a glance by day, by night and on satellite.

    • Tweak

Area boundaries are dotted on the car screen

On CarPlay and Android Auto, the outline of a risk area is now a dotted line, and flagged roads stay dashed. An orange boundary meeting an orange road at a junction no longer looks like two roads.

    • Fix

Dashboard mini-map comes back in seconds

When the car unit warns the phone about memory, the mini-map briefly hands its graphics memory back. It used to stay off for over a minute after a single warning; it now comes back after about eight seconds, and only stays off longer if the warnings keep coming.

  58. 4 September 2026

    • Fix

Mossel Bay re-mapped, and the whole municipality is covered

Mossel Bay was first mapped from the town centre outward, and the area it covered stopped short of Kwanonqaba and Asla Park while taking in the whole seafront. That put the harbour, Santos Bay and the golf estate at the highest risk rating and left the two areas local reporting flags most often with no rating at all. Coverage now runs across the full municipality, from Gouritsmond in the west to Great Brak River in the east, and every area has been re-rated against SAPS data for the eight police stations that serve it rather than the one inside the old boundary.

    • Feature

Places to discover in Mossel Bay, Rustenburg and Pilanesberg

The map now shows tappable places in the three newest areas, the way it already did for the older ones: Sun City, the Valley of Waves and Pilanesberg National Park; Waterfall Mall, the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace and Kgaswane Mountain Reserve; and the Dias Museum, Cape St Blaize lighthouse and Santos Beach. Tap one for a short description and a read on the area around it.

    • Tweak

Speed cameras around Sun City and Mossel Bay

Known fixed camera positions have been added for the Pilanesberg and Mossel Bay areas, so you get the same heads-up there that you already get in the older areas.

  59. 3 September 2026

    • Fix

Route scoring measured at a fixed resolution

Once a drive got long, the safety scorer was measuring each route on a thinned-out copy of its shape, and two routes through the same risk areas could come out up to two kilometres apart in red exposure purely from how the thinning fell. On the Johannesburg to Sun City drive that made Balanced and Lower-risk prefer a flagged surface road over the Western Bypass, a highway with no known risk. Every route, short or long, is now measured on its full shape at a fixed 50 metre resolution, so equal exposure scores equal.

  60. 3 September 2026

    • Feature

      Rustenburg is covered

Risk zones and road ratings now cover Rustenburg and the roads through it, including the N4 Platinum Highway and the R565 running north toward Sun City. Together with Pilanesberg this covers the destination end of the drive from Johannesburg. Your location is recognised there now, so the map opens where you actually are.

  61. 2 September 2026

    • Feature

Pilanesberg and Sun City are covered

Risk zones and road ratings now cover Pilanesberg National Park and the areas around it, including Sun City, Ledig, Mogwase and Moruleng. Routes through the park and the resort are scored the same way as the metros, and the approach roads (the R510, R512, R556 and R565) each carry their own rating. Your location is also recognised there now, so the map opens where you actually are instead of falling back to Johannesburg.

  62. 2 September 2026

    • Fix

Natural voice restored on older installs

An early build offered three South African guidance voices that Google turned out not to have. If your phone still had one of them saved, every spoken prompt fell back to the robotic built-in voice, on every drive, with nothing on screen to say why. A saved voice is now checked against the list the app actually offers, and anything unavailable falls back to Olivia, so the natural voice returns on its own the next time you open the app.

  63. 2 September 2026

    • Fix

Guidance keeps up with the screen off

Version 1.5.0. On a CarPlay drive with the phone locked, reroutes and safety alerts could wait until the screen woke up. The app now keeps its timers and network replies running while the display is off, so a reroute no longer has to wait for the next unlock.

    • Fix

Lock Screen card stays on the turn

The Lock Screen and Dynamic Island card could fall a hundred metres behind the turn on a locked phone. Its updates now run at a higher priority, so the card shows the same turn the car does.

    • Tweak

      Clearer crash reports

When the app does crash, the report we receive now names the exact function instead of a memory address, so a fix can start from the right line instead of a guess.

  64. 2 September 2026

    • Feature

      Satellite view

Settings › Navigation › Basemap now offers Satellite: real aerial photos under your map, with street names and your route still drawn on top. Good for finding a gate, a complex entrance or which side of the road a place is on. Risk areas, corridors and your routing are identical on either basemap: this only changes how the map looks. Free for everyone, and phone only for now, so CarPlay and Android Auto keep the normal map. Aerial photos always stream, so they are not part of a downloaded offline area: keep Basemap on Map where you expect to lose signal.

    • Fix

Route preview always draws its risk layers

On the route screen the risk areas, corridors and reported closures could occasionally fail to appear if the map was still loading when they were added. They now wait for the map to be ready, so the preview never comes up missing them.

  65. 1 September 2026

    • Fix

Day and night maps agree on the car screen

With Map lighting on Auto, the main CarPlay map could stay in night colours on a bright day while the dashboard mini map correctly showed day. Some cars report night mode to apps all the time, so the map no longer listens to the car for its look: every screen now follows the time of day together.

    • Fix

Car-screen buttons recover on their own

Tapping the CarPlay map hides the on-screen buttons, and they could then refuse to come back. The app now quietly re-places its buttons as you drive or touch the screen, so a stuck strip rights itself within seconds.

    • Fix

The mini map keeps your car while stopped

The dashboard mini map hid the car marker whenever you stood still for a few seconds, and it only returned once you moved off. A parked car now stays on its map.

  66. 30 August 2026

    • Fix

Dashboard mini map no longer disappears mid-drive

The small CarPlay dashboard map could go dark for ten minutes in the middle of a long drive: a memory safeguard was misreading normal driving as a problem. It now steps aside only when the phone itself reports memory trouble, and comes back within about a minute instead of ten.

  67. 29 August 2026

    • Feature

Risk areas are outlines on the car screen

On CarPlay and Android Auto, risk areas are now drawn as a coloured boundary instead of a coloured wash over the map. The shading made the roads inside a zone hard to pick out, and at night a yellow or orange area lit up the whole display. The outline says the same thing without touching the roads, and the screen edge still glows when you are inside a higher-risk area. The phone map is unchanged.

    • Feature

Hijacking hotspots and speed cameras on the mini map

The small dashboard map on CarPlay now shows the same hotspot and speed-camera pins the phone and the main car screen have always shown. Both still follow their switches in Settings.

    • Fix

The car map opens on your location

Connecting to CarPlay or Android Auto without opening the app on your phone first left the car map with no vehicle and no risk areas until the first GPS fix arrived, which in a garage can take a while. It now starts from your last known position, so the map opens where you are.

    • Fix

Bigger, better-placed controls on the car screen

The car screen now measures itself instead of trusting the size the system reports at connection time, so the speed dial and the road card are sized for the screen you actually have. On large head units they now grow past phone size rather than stopping there. Your car is also positioned against the part of the map you can really see, which fixes the off-centre map on the Android Auto split screen.

    • Fix

Free drive tells you about the road, not the suburb

With no route set, the dashboard card put the area warning next to the road name, so a clean street inside a busier suburb read as if the street itself were the problem. The card now describes the road you are on. The area is still shown, by the coloured frame around the tile.

  68. 28 August 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay mini map stays up on long drives

On longer drives the small dashboard map could step aside for about ten minutes and show only the speed card, because a routine memory reading was mistaken for memory trouble. The app now tells the two apart: the mini map stays up through a normal drive, and still gets out of the way instantly when the phone is genuinely running low on memory.

  69. 28 August 2026

    • Tweak

      Sharper crash reports

When something does go wrong, the crash report can now pinpoint the exact place in the app's code, so fixes land faster. Nothing new is collected: this only makes the existing reports readable.

  70. 28 August 2026

    • Feature

      Quieter alerts on safer roads

When a verified safer road takes you through a risk area (say, a protected highway through a red zone), the spoken "entering a higher-risk area" warning now stays quiet: the road is doing its job. The zone still shows on the map and the screen edge, and a road that is itself flagged as dangerous still warns. You can switch this off in Settings under Safety alerts, "Quiet on safer roads".

    • Feature

The route screen follows your theme

The route-options screen now matches your Light or Dark setting like the rest of the app, instead of always being dark. The risk pills, the A-E safety grade and the numbered stop badges all got legible text on every colour, and the map ribbon stays neutral until a route is actually chosen.

    • Fix

Ending a drive early no longer reads as "arrived"

If you end a drive before the destination, the trip summary and anyone following your shared link now see that the drive ended, not "Arrived safely". Arriving still reads as arriving.

    • Fix

Tap a stop or destination to edit it

Tapping a filled stop or the destination name now opens it for editing instead of deleting it or dropping the whole route. The ✕ is the only way to remove one.

    • Fix

Search results can no longer get stale or stuck

Slow search responses can no longer overwrite what you typed next, relabel a dropped pin, or leave the spinner running. Nearby category search says when search is unavailable rather than claiming an empty neighbourhood.

    • Tweak

      Smaller polish across the app

The guide follows your theme, banners at the bottom of the map stack instead of overlapping, the Go button is easier to hit, offline maps no longer flash an empty list, and the About screen shows the exact version for bug reports. In landscape, the guided tour now points at the controls it is describing, and opening Routes from a connected head unit fits the whole route on screen the way it does on the phone.

  71. 25 August 2026

    • Fix

The app now says so when location is off

If location permission is denied or no GPS fix arrives, the home screen and the drive screen now show a clear "Location is off" notice you can tap to jump straight to your phone's settings. Before, the app quietly routed you from Rosebank and left you guessing.

    • Fix

      Start Navigation stays on screen

On the route screen the Start Navigation and Google Maps buttons are now pinned at the bottom, so they no longer slide out of view when the lower-risk options arrive.

    • Fix

Honest banner while risk data syncs

A fresh install used to claim "Offline: showing bundled zone data" while it was actually online and busy downloading. It now says it is getting the latest risk data, and only says Offline when it really is.

    • Fix

      First-run flow untangled

The welcome tour and the notifications question no longer pop up over the intro slides, replaying the intro from Settings no longer shows the risk disclaimer again or leaves a duplicate map behind, and the About screen now reports the real app version.

    • Tweak

      Light-mode and small-screen polish

The legal documents now follow your light or dark theme, search says "No results" or "Couldn't search" instead of showing a blank pane, and a handful of screens got small layout corrections.

  72. 25 August 2026

    • Feature

Crash reports now reach us, so faults actually get fixed

If the app crashes, it now sends us the fault and a short trail of what led up to it. Until today, a crash you hit was simply a crash we never heard about. The reports carry no name and no account, and your saved places, your starting point, your destination and every coordinate are stripped out on your phone before anything is sent. They are stored in the European Union and used only to fix faults.

    • Tweak

Privacy policy and terms brought up to date

The Legal section in Settings now carries the current documents: Tsamaya (Pty) Ltd as the responsible party, info@tsamayaapp.co.za as the contact address, the two optional notification switches described in full, and a new section covering crash reporting. Nothing about how routes are chosen has changed.

  73. 25 August 2026

    • Fix

The car screen map is properly dark at night again

On CarPlay and Android Auto after dark, a medium-risk area could tint the whole map until it looked like the daytime map dimmed, washing out the roads. Medium-risk areas are now drawn lighter over the night map, so the map reads as night and the roads stay clear. Daytime is unchanged.

    • Fix

Closing a report map no longer forces a decision

In the report review screen, opening "View on map" left no way out except approving, rejecting, or force-quitting: the close button was being laid out underneath the details panel, off screen. It now sits at the top of every report map where you can actually reach it.

  74. 22 August 2026

    • Fix

Starting a drive far from its start no longer ends it instantly

If a drive began while you were well away from the planned starting point, it could count as "arrived" the moment it started and stop before it began. It now re-routes from where you actually are and carries on, as it should.

    • Tweak

Diagnostics tell memory in use from memory reserved

The diagnostics export and its heartbeat now record how much memory the app is actually using alongside how much it has reserved. The reserved figure was the one that looked like a leak in recent reports; the two numbers together settle that at a glance.

  75. 22 August 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay mini map comes back after a music detour

On the CarPlay dashboard, switching to full-screen music and back could leave the Tsamaya mini map on its plain road-and-speed card, or show a blank tile for a few seconds while the map rebuilt. The map now stays ready while you are away and comes back already on your car. On phones where a long drive pushes memory high, the mini map also returns once things settle instead of staying hidden for the rest of the trip.

    • Fix

      Route grades now explain themselves

A route card could show a worse grade than the one below it while listing fewer flagged areas, with nothing on screen to explain the gap. The missing piece was distance through low-risk areas, which counts towards the grade but was never shown. Route cards now say it, so the letter always matches what is listed.

    • Tweak

Android phones now get updates too

Updates are published to Android as well as iPhone from now on, so both run the same version of Tsamaya. This one brings Android up to date with everything shipped since 16 August: honest traffic ETAs, the rebuilt route picker, background GPS that stops when the drive does, and the mid-drive time band fix.

  76. 20 August 2026

    • Feature

CarPlay follows your car into night mode

When your head unit switches to night (a garage, a storm, early winter dusk) the car map now darkens with it instead of staying in daylight. Zone borders are also calmer on the night map, so your route stands out.

    • Feature

Road alerts reach the car screen

Reroute and heavy-traffic notices now show on CarPlay, closed roads draw their grey hatching there, and if barricades are reported on or near your route you get a heads-up as the drive starts.

    • Tweak

      Cleaner CarPlay chrome

The speed dial docks in whichever corner is free on your head unit, turn cards only take a risk colour when it matters (orange and red always, calmer tiers near the turn), reporting a speed camera is one screen shorter, and report confirmations dismiss themselves.

  77. 19 August 2026

    • Fix

      CarPlay route preview fixed

The route choices screen now frames your whole route beside the route card instead of behind it, on every head unit, whichever side the card sits. The car marker, speed dial and road pill no longer cover the preview, and the map uses the full visible space.

  78. 18 August 2026

    • Fix

No more background battery drain after a drive

If a drive ended while your phone was locked, the app could keep using GPS in the background until it was force-closed, showing up as "Background Location Services" and real battery drain days later. Location now switches off the moment a drive ends or the app leaves the screen without one, and any stuck session from an older version is cleaned up when you next open the app. Guidance with the screen off during an actual drive is unchanged.

  79. 18 August 2026

    • Feature

The route screen always shows your real choices

When Fastest, Balanced and Lower-risk all pick the same road, that card now says so in its title ("Fastest · Balanced · Lower-risk") instead of showing one unexplained route. And when other sensible roads exist, they appear as extra options (named by their main road, safety-graded, and fully drivable) on the phone and on the CarPlay picker. If there truly is only one sensible road, the screen says that too.

  80. 18 August 2026

    • Feature

Pick Fastest, Balanced or Lower-risk on every trip

The route options are now named for the trade they make: Fastest takes the quickest way and makes no attempt to avoid flagged areas, while Balanced and Lower-risk steer around them. The Fastest card says plainly when it passes high-risk areas, with a one-time note the first time you choose it. The same three options, with the same wording, appear on the CarPlay route picker.

    • Fix

ETAs now belong to the route you actually chose

When your chosen route was not the road Mapbox considered fastest in traffic, the ETA could show that other road's time and read minutes off from the very start of the drive. Every option now shows its own live-traffic ETA, and after a mid-drive reroute the ETA keeps its traffic adjustment instead of turning optimistic.

    • Feature

Zoom and pan the CarPlay map

The CarPlay route screen now has zoom buttons, responds to pinch and drag on touch screens, and redraws the map as you flip between route options. Panning while driving no longer overshoots, and the map returns to following the car a few seconds after you stop exploring.

    • Feature

Search for a new destination mid-drive on CarPlay

A Search button now sits in the CarPlay top bar while navigating. Pick a new place and the route options preview over your current drive: guidance carries on until you tap Go, and cancelling changes nothing.

  81. 16 August 2026

    • Fix

Risk timing no longer freezes mid-drive

On long drives the app could keep using daytime risk levels after 17:30 (and evening levels after 19:30), so areas whose risk rises after dark were shown and priced too low. The time of day now updates reliably during navigation, including on CarPlay.

    • Fix

Evening and night risk levels restored for 221 areas

Some areas had their per-time-of-day risk levels stored in a format the app skipped, so they showed their daytime level all day. Those levels now load correctly.

  82. 16 August 2026

    • Fix

Turning voice on mid-drive now tells you the right distance

Switching voice guidance on partway through a drive used to replay the last turn announcement with its old distance ("in 3 km" when the turn was 2.4 km away). It now announces the next turn with the live distance instead.

    • Fix

Music no longer dips seconds before the voice speaks

Natural-voice prompts are now downloaded and kept on the phone ahead of time, so the music ducks as the voice starts, not three seconds before it, and prompts no longer arrive late at the turn.

    • Fix

CarPlay shows rated areas it used to leave blank

On the car screen, yellow areas were drawn so faintly in daylight they looked like missing data, and verified-safe areas were not drawn at all. Yellow is now clearly visible and verified-safe areas show as a light green tint.

  83. 16 August 2026

    • Fix

Guided tour highlights line up on Android

On Android the short tour that points out the navigation buttons was drawing its highlight slightly above the button it was describing. The highlight now sits on the right button.

  84. 16 August 2026

    • Feature

Roads that are closed are now routed around

Some roads are gated off, barricaded or washed away, and map data is often years behind. Tsamaya can now hold its own record of those, plan around them rather than merely treating them as risky, and draw them greyed out with a hatch so they read as "not a road you can use" instead of as a danger area. A closed road is never counted as a safety warning, and if a closure sits between you and your destination you still get a route, with the road named so the barrier is not a surprise.

  85. 15 August 2026

    • Fix

      Saved places open properly again

Tapping a saved place from the Saved Places list used to stack a second copy of the home screen in front of the one that had taken your destination, so the map just slid back to where you were standing and nothing else happened. It now returns to the home screen you came from, with the place set and ready to Go.

    • Fix

Your car is back on the CarPlay mini map

The mini map decides on connect whether it can draw a live map, and a busy first connect could make it give up too early and hand the tile to the simpler backup map, which only ever drew a plain arrow, never your chosen car. The check now ignores time the phone spent frozen, the backup map draws your car too, and after the mini map steps aside to save memory it comes back as a map rather than a black rectangle.

  86. 14 August 2026

    • Feature

      Rerouting now follows your lead

When you keep choosing your own road, Tsamaya stops arguing. After a couple of quick reroutes it plans along the road you are actually driving (with a notice on screen) and your chosen safety level takes over again once you are back on a planned route. Risk colours and alerts stay honest the whole time. Auto-reroute also can no longer run out for the rest of a drive: the old hard cap of eight reroutes per trip (one tester hit it in 14 minutes) is now a rolling budget that always recovers, and it says so on screen on the rare occasion it pauses.

    • Fix

Alerts stick to your chosen voice

Safety alerts are spoken from a warmed-up cache now, so the natural Google voice keeps working at exactly the busy moments (like right after a reroute) where it used to briefly fall back to the plain iOS voice. The little spoken confirmations when you tap the voice button ("Alerts only") also use your selected voice instead of the system default. When a fallback does still happen, the app now records it so we can see how often.

    • Fix

      Steadier on long drives

On phones with less memory, a long CarPlay drive could quietly end navigation mid-trip. Tsamaya now watches its own memory and temporarily switches off the decorative extras (3D buildings, the animated route line, never the safety colours) before that can happen, and brings them back once things settle. Risk-area voice alerts also remember their recent history across an app restart, so a restart mid-drive no longer repeats a warning you just heard.

  87. 14 August 2026

    • Fix

Shared live-trip links now open inside Tsamaya

Opening a shared "track my trip" link on a phone that has Tsamaya installed used to land on the home screen with the trip nowhere in sight: the app claimed the link but only knew the web address under a slightly different name. Those links now open the live-trip viewer directly. Links opened on phones without the app keep working in the browser exactly as before, and older links your contacts already have are covered too.

  88. 14 August 2026

    • Feature

See a proposed road closure on the map before approving it

The closure review queue now has a "See it on the map" button showing exactly which stretches of road would be marked red, and the area around them, before you approve anything. The watch already worked these out from OpenStreetMap while checking each closure and then discarded them; it now keeps them. Review team only.

  89. 14 August 2026

    • Fix

Road-closure alerts now open the closures themselves

Tapping the daily "closures awaiting your approval" notification opened the app on the map with nothing to act on. It now opens a review queue showing each closure the watch found but would not publish on its own (the roads, the time window, the source, and why it was held back) with Approve and Reject. Approving publishes it on the next check, within 30 minutes. Review team only.

  90. 14 August 2026

    • Fix

Voice prompts no longer weaken locked-phone navigation

The silent audio loop that keeps navigation running while the phone is locked was being torn down and rebuilt after spoken instructions: on a guided CarPlay drive that happened every few minutes, each time opening a brief gap in which iOS could pause the app. Handing your music back after a prompt now resumes the loop in place instead of rebuilding it. Also fixed the drive log recording the previous route's remaining distance right after a reroute (display was always correct; only diagnostics were affected).

  91. 12 August 2026

    • Fix

Dashboard mini map recovers after memory pressure

When iPhone memory ran low, the CarPlay dashboard mini map was switched off for the rest of the day as a protective measure. Even unplugging CarPlay could not bring it back. It now returns on its own once memory has been calm for ten minutes, and comes back in the lighter map style so the retry does not recreate the pressure.

  92. 12 August 2026

    • Fix

Reroutes no longer wait for your screen

Fixed a serious bug where a mid-drive reroute (and other live updates) could stall until the phone screen was woken: on locked-phone CarPlay drives, finished network responses were stuck behind iOS's frozen JS timers. Rerouting now completes with the screen off, and a genuinely stuck reroute cancels itself and retries instead of silently switching off for the rest of the drive.

    • Fix

Warning border now matches the map in overlapping zones

Where a smaller, more specific zone sits on top of a bigger one, the screen-edge warning and risk alerts now follow the same "most specific zone wins" rule as the map colours and the router: no more red border while the map under the car shows orange.

  93. 11 August 2026

    • Feature

Speed cameras and hotspots on the CarPlay map

The car screen now shows the same fixed speed-camera pins and hijacking / smash-and-grab hotspot markers as the phone maps, following the same Settings toggles.

    • Fix

Music dims only when the voice actually speaks

The music used to dip while the natural voice was still being fetched: a few silent seconds before anything was said. It now dims at the moment the words start.

    • Tweak

Traffic heads-up now says it clearly

Routes are planned with live traffic, so a jam's delay is already inside your ETA. The heads-up now says exactly that, instead of sounding like your arrival time is about to jump.

  94. 11 August 2026

    • Fix

Reroutes and the speedo stay live with the screen locked

Coming to a stop with the phone locked used to freeze the app's engine: reroutes could take minutes to land on CarPlay and the speedometer stuck at your last moving speed. Navigation now keeps itself scheduled through standstills, so reroutes, the speedo and safety updates stay current without waking the phone.

    • Fix

      Forgotten trips end themselves

Parking just short of your destination (or pocketing the phone while the trip-rating card was up) used to leave navigation (and GPS) running in the background all night. A stationary, unattended trip now ends itself within half an hour, and the rating card steps aside when you leave the app.

    • Fix

CarPlay taps before GPS is ready now start themselves

Choosing a destination on CarPlay right after plugging in used to ask you to try again once GPS locked. The tap is now remembered and the route starts on its own the moment a fix lands. The branded Tsamaya car marker is also now correctly reserved on the car screen: everyone else gets the standard arrow or their own custom car photo.

  95. 11 August 2026

    • Fix

      Risk alerts stop repeating themselves

Driving along the edge of a risk area (or through the gap between two) could speak "entering a high-risk area" every few seconds. The alert now waits until you are genuinely inside an area, and the same level of risk stays quiet for two minutes after you leave it. The map, the route ribbon and the CarPlay tile still show live risk every second: only the voice and buzz calm down.

    • Fix

CarPlay mini map now shades risk areas

The small dashboard map (the one beside your music) only showed a coloured frame around the tile. It now shades the suburbs around you with the same colours as the full-screen car map.

  96. 10 August 2026

    • Fix

Risk areas no longer double up on the map

Where two risk areas covered the same ground (a suburb sitting inside a larger area, or the same place listed under two metros) their colours were painted on top of each other, so a yellow area inside another yellow area came out looking a shade worse than either really is. Each patch of ground is now shaded once, in the colour the routing actually uses, with outlines still marking every area. The counts on the home screen no longer count one place twice either.

  97. 9 August 2026

    • Fix

Search now finds the closest branch

Searching a place with a lot of branches used to offer them in no particular order: a Kung-Fu Kitchen or a Steers halfway across the province could come up while the one down the road never appeared. Suggestions are now weighted to where you actually are, and each one shows how far away it is as you type.

  98. 9 August 2026

    • Feature

      A proper search screen

Tapping "Where to?" now opens a full-screen search: recent trips up front, suggestions as you type, and a full results list with addresses, distance from you, ratings and open/closed status. Tap a place and you're routing.

    • Feature

      Over-speed chime

Opt in under Settings › Navigation › Speed warnings and Tsamaya plays a short ping when you drift more than 10 or 20 km/h over the posted limit, with an occasional reminder if you stay over. Off by default, and where no limit is known, nothing sounds.

    • Feature

      Choose how camera alerts speak

Settings › Navigation › Speed cameras now has a voice-alert mode: every camera ahead (as before), only when you're near the camera's limit (about 8 seconds out, with a "check your speed" nudge) or off, keeping the map pins without the voice.

  99. 9 August 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay keeps your voice and safety settings

When a drive started from the car screen with your phone still locked in your pocket, Tsamaya could fall back to the default guidance voice, volume and safety alerts instead of the ones you chose. CarPlay now loads all your saved choices (voice, volume, safety nudges, route preference and camera alerts) on every start.

  100. 9 August 2026

    • Feature

Road-closure alerts, if you want them

Tsamaya can now tell you when a protest, race or road closure hits your city: the same disruptions it already routes you around. Alerts only go to the metro they affect, so you won't be woken about a road 1,400 km away. A second, separate switch covers occasional new-feature news, so muting one never mutes the other. Both live in Settings › General › Notifications, and nothing is sent unless you allow it.

  101. 9 August 2026

    • Fix

Reported speed traps stay honest about what they are

A camera van someone reported is now always treated as a van: shown for about three hours from when it was spotted, never turned into a permanent camera on the map. Only genuinely fixed cameras stay put.

  102. 9 August 2026

    • Tweak

Tell us when a switched-off camera comes back

Tap any greyed-out speed camera and you can now report that it's working again: a few reports switch it back to a live camera. We also corrected one camera on Grayston Drive in Sandton that was wrongly left marked as active.

  103. 9 August 2026

    • Fix

Johannesburg speed cameras marked as not operating

Johannesburg's automated speed cameras have been switched off since December 2025: the city's contract with its camera supplier ended and the equipment was removed. Those cameras now show greyed out on the map, and tapping one explains why. We still call them out as you approach, because a new provider could switch them back on at any time without notice. Enforcement in Johannesburg also continues by roadblock and manned traps, so keep to the limit: it is the cameras that stopped, not the policing. Pretoria and Ekurhuleni run their own cameras and are unaffected.

    • Feature

Report a speed trap, and help keep it accurate

When you report a speed camera you can now say whether it's a camera van or a permanent camera. Vans show on the map in amber for about three hours; tap one and tell us "still there" to keep it up for other drivers, or "not there" to take it down. Permanent cameras you report stay put: South African map data barely covers Gauteng's fixed cameras, so those reports are genuinely valuable.

  104. 8 August 2026

    • Feature

Your route appears immediately; safer options follow

Tapping Go now opens the route screen as soon as the standard route is ready, with a progress card showing the safer-route search still working. The safer options slide in when found, and if the search fails (weak signal), the screen says so instead of quietly pretending there was only one road. The search itself also retries once, so a brief signal drop no longer costs you the safer route.

    • Feature

An even lower-risk option, when going far around is worth it

Sometimes a much safer road exists but is too long for the normal detour limit. When it removes at least half the risk, it now appears as a separate "even lower-risk, much longer" card you can choose deliberately. It never replaces your route on its own, and one tap brings the shorter option back.

  105. 8 August 2026

    • Fix

Lower-risk routes will now go the long way around

When the direct road runs through high-risk areas, the Balanced and Lower-risk options used to cap how far around they would take you: on some trips the only genuinely safer road was just past that cap, so all three options collapsed onto the same risky route. Escaping high-risk areas now earns extra detour room in proportion to the risk it removes, so a trip whose direct road crosses several danger zones can take the highway loop around them instead.

  106. 6 August 2026

    • Fix

Lighter on memory during CarPlay drives

During a drive, up to five live maps could be open at once (the home screen and route screens stay loaded underneath navigation): enough for iOS to shut the app down mid-drive on some days. Covered screens now release their maps while you navigate and bring them back the moment the drive ends, and the CarPlay dashboard tile falls back to its text card if the phone ever runs short of memory.

  107. 6 August 2026

    • Fix

Road closures now follow the actual roads

A closed road used to be drawn as a short straight line through roughly the right spot, which cut across the street grid instead of tracing the road. Closures are now mapped along the real road, and the affected area is shaped around them rather than boxed off.

    • Feature

A road race is no longer flagged as a protest

Closures now say why the road is shut. A marathon or parade reads as a planned closure, roadworks as roadworks, and only actual unrest gets the red warning. You are routed around all of them the same way: the difference is what you are told.

    • Fix

Closures only apply while the road is actually shut

A closure announced days ahead used to start diverting traffic the moment it was added. It now stays dormant until its start time and clears itself when the road reopens.

    • Fix

      More trustworthy closure data

The daily check that finds closures was quietly failing most mornings, and could place a road tens of kilometres away when the same street name exists elsewhere in the city. Both are fixed, and a road that cannot be pinned down is now held back for review instead of being guessed at.

  108. 6 August 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay: the End button on your phone can no longer vanish

With CarPlay connected, switching the phone between the map and directions views (or tapping the trip stats) could hide the trip bar, leaving no way to end the route without force-closing the app. While CarPlay is connected the bar now stays put, always.

    • Fix

Locked-screen drives: music restore and rerouting hardened

On drives with the screen locked, the fix that hands your music back after each instruction could itself stop the background heartbeat that keeps the app responsive, leaving music dimmed and rerouting frozen until the screen woke. The hand-back now runs in the moment the spoken clip finishes, the background heartbeat repairs itself if it is ever paused, and the brief audio handover can no longer be interrupted midway.

  110. 6 August 2026

    • Fix

New installs start with the full current risk map

The map data bundled into the app for a brand-new install was from the earliest days of Tsamaya: a handful of coarse blocks that showed for a few seconds until the live data downloaded. The app now ships with a complete, current copy of every zone and rated road, so the very first screen a new user sees is the real risk picture.

    • Fix

      Android: smoother start to navigation

On Android, starting a drive no longer bounces you into the system settings page for background location: navigation starts immediately with while-you-use-it access.

  111. 6 August 2026

    • Fix

Music really comes back after each instruction now

On CarPlay (and locked-phone drives) your music dimmed at the first spoken instruction and never recovered until you woke the phone. iPhones only restore other apps' volume when the app that dimmed them briefly lets go of the speaker, and Tsamaya was holding on for the whole drive to keep itself awake in the background. After each spoken line it now lets go for a split second and takes the speaker straight back: your music returns to full volume the moment the voice stops, and navigation keeps running with the screen off exactly as before.

  112. 2 August 2026

    • Fix

The real reason directions kept going quiet

Every time Tsamaya finished speaking, it was handing the phone's audio back completely, which also gave up the permission it needs to keep running with the screen off. So after the first instruction of a drive it would gradually go to sleep, and only wake when you picked the phone up. It now keeps that permission for the whole trip. This is also what made your music jump back to full volume for a few seconds after each instruction.

  113. 2 August 2026

    • Fix

Your music stays at full volume between directions

Music was being turned down for the whole drive instead of just while Tsamaya was speaking, dipping from the moment you set off and only coming back for a few seconds after each instruction. It now ducks around the spoken line and hands your music straight back.

  114. 2 August 2026

    • Fix

Guidance no longer goes quiet mid-drive

This is the one that kept coming back. Tsamaya was asking iOS to let it keep running with the screen off, but iOS only grants that to an app that is actually playing sound, and between spoken directions there is none, so it kept getting put to sleep. It now plays a silent tone for the length of a drive, which keeps it awake and the directions coming. You will not hear it and your music is untouched.

  115. 2 August 2026

    • Fix

Voice guidance keeps talking with the phone asleep

Directions could go quiet mid-drive and only pick up again the moment you woke your phone. Two separate causes: Tsamaya was letting iOS pause its own voice whenever the phone locked, and the claim it makes to keep running in the car was only made once when you plugged in, so if anything took it away later, nothing put it back. It now holds that claim for the whole drive and re-checks it as you move.

    • Tweak

Better evidence if a drive ends by itself

If navigation ever stops without you ending it, the shared log now records why the screen closed and whether the drive was still running at the time, so the next report can name the cause instead of guessing at it.

  116. 2 August 2026

    • Fix

      Stops are announced by name

On a trip with stops, the voice used to say "you have arrived at your destination" at every stop, and then cut itself off mid-word. Each stop is now announced by its own name ("In 600 metres, Mall@55 will be on the left"), and only the real destination ends the trip. Reversing a trip with the swap button now also reverses your stops.

    • Fix

      Road-closure alerts behave better

Dismissing a protest banner now hides only those closures: a new protest later in the day still alerts you. Alerts also stay quiet unless Tsamaya knows where you actually are, so you are never warned about another city's roads.

  117. 1 August 2026

    • Feature

      Add stops along the way

Running errands? Tap "Add stop" on the route card to build a trip with up to four stops: shops, a friend, then home. Each leg is checked for danger zones separately, so the detour is as carefully routed as the main trip, and Tsamaya tells you when you reach each stop.

    • Feature

      Protests and road closures

Tsamaya now watches the news each morning for planned protests, strikes and road blockades in your city, and routes you around them for as long as they last. Affected roads show as a red-and-white striped line, and you only hear about closures within 50 km of you.

  118. 1 August 2026

    • Fix

The voice now finishes the drive

Arriving used to cut the guidance voice off mid-sentence: "in forty metres, you will arri…". Tsamaya now closes every trip properly: "You have arrived at your destination. Go well."

  119. 31 July 2026

    • Feature

Full 3D maps on CarPlay, if you want them

A new switch in Settings › Navigation › CarPlay puts the full 3D map (buildings, landmarks and time-of-day lighting) on the car screens during the day. It is experimental and heavier on memory, so the proven flat driving map stays the default; after dark the high-contrast night map still takes over either way.

    • Feature

Your car, on the little dashboard map

The mini map on the CarPlay dashboard now shows your chosen vehicle marker (including your own uploaded car photo) instead of always the blue arrow.

  120. 31 July 2026

    • Fix

Off the route, the risk readout reads where you actually are

When you left the route, the safety readout could keep reading the risk of the road you were supposed to be on rather than the one you are on. Once you are more than about forty metres off the line, it now reads your real position until the new route lands.

    • Fix

Two more ways the car could put Tsamaya back to sleep

Muting the voice mid-drive, or a genuinely stuck voice clip, could quietly undo the keep-awake fix from earlier today and return CarPlay to its slow-motion state. Both paths now leave the keep-awake alone.

  121. 31 July 2026

    • Fix

Working out a route in the car is quick again

Tapping Home or Work on the car screen could sit on a spinner for over a minute and only finish when you woke your phone: a four kilometre trip took eighty seconds, of which the actual routing was about a fifth of a second. Tsamaya now keeps itself awake for your whole time plugged in, not just while a route is running, so working one out is as quick as following one.

    • Fix

The dashboard card stops going blank when you park

After arriving, the little card on the CarPlay home screen could drop back to "Open Tsamaya on the car screen" even though it was still running. One slow update was enough to make it give up on the whole session. It now holds on.

  122. 31 July 2026

    • Fix

The road and its risk stay on screen while rerouting

While Tsamaya worked out a new route, the panel under your car replaced the road name and its safety rating with "Rerouting…". That is the moment you need it most: you have left the route, possibly somewhere you would rather not be. The road and its rating now stay put; the spinner says the rest.

  123. 31 July 2026

    • Fix

The right speed limit for the stretch you are on

On a long run like the M1 the limit changes several times, but Tsamaya was showing one number for the whole stretch, and it picked the highest one, so a 100 zone displayed 120. It now reads the limit for the exact piece of road under your car. On the M1 north out of Rosebank that is 100 for most of it, as it should be.

  124. 31 July 2026

    • Fix

Tsamaya keeps working while you drive

On a CarPlay drive your phone was giving Tsamaya almost no time to think (measured at four percent), which is why guidance arrived late, rerouting crawled, and the car screen only caught up when you picked the phone up. It now holds on to the audio channel it uses for spoken directions, which keeps it running for the whole drive. Your music is untouched.

    • Fix

The road rating matches the map again

The line under your car could be drawn green for a verified-safe road while the label beside it said "Unrated road". The map read the rating from the road itself; the label read it from your raw GPS position, which between tall buildings can sit a lane or two off. Both now read the road you are actually on.

    • Tweak

A smaller road label on the CarPlay dashboard

The road name and safety pill on the little dashboard map were too big and sat low enough to hide behind the arrival time. Smaller now, and lifted clear of it.

  125. 31 July 2026

    • Tweak

The log stops calling restarts crashes

When you force-quit Tsamaya (to pick up an update, say) the navigation log recorded it as though the app had crashed, because it never got the chance to note it was closing. It now also records how long the app had been running and whether a real error was caught, so a restart no longer looks like a crash.

  126. 31 July 2026

    • Fix

      Rerouting actually finishes now

When you left the route, Tsamaya could sit on "Finding a lower-risk route" and then quietly give up, every time. The countdown it used to decide it had waited long enough kept running while the app itself was paused by the phone, so it had always "run out of time" before the new route had a chance to arrive. It now only counts time the app was genuinely awake and working.

    • Fix

No more two voices talking over each other

The natural voice and the built-in one could speak different instructions at the same time. Same cause as the rerouting problem: the app decided a clip had got stuck when really the phone had paused it, so it gave up and spoke the next instruction on top. Both now wait on time the app was actually running.

    • Feature

A bigger, tilted map on the CarPlay dashboard

The little Tsamaya card on the CarPlay home screen was mostly a text block, leaving only a sliver of map. Your speed is now the same round dial as the main screen, tucked into the corner, with the road name and its safety rating on a pill under the car, so almost the whole tile is map, and it is tilted to the same angle as the main navigation view.

    • Fix

The right road name in free drive

After ending a route, the car screen could name a house you were driving past rather than the road you were on. It now asks which road you are actually travelling along.

    • Fix

The route picker shows the route again

Choosing between Fastest, Balanced and Lower-risk on the car screen zoomed out to fit the route across the whole display, including the half hidden behind the list of choices. It now fits the route into the part of the map you can actually see.

  127. 31 July 2026

    • Tweak

Better diagnostics when something goes wrong in the car

If you hit a problem while driving and share the navigation log from Settings, it now records far more of what happened: which part of the app failed, what was on screen over the map, and a much fuller crash trace. Nothing extra leaves your phone: the log still only goes where you send it.

  128. 31 July 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay: your speed and road stay on the dashboard

The small Tsamaya card on the CarPlay home screen used to go quiet once a drive started, leaving only the posted limit. It now keeps your live speed, the road you are on and its safety tier for the whole drive, and the little map behind it is tilted to match the main one.

    • Fix

Risk areas now show on the car map

The CarPlay map drew flagged roads but not the risk area you were actually inside. Nearby zones are now outlined in their live colour, so an amber or red area is visible from the car screen too.

    • Fix

Route picker: a real Cancel, and a real overview

Choosing between Fastest, Balanced and Lower-risk on the car screen now zooms out to show the whole route you are picking, and there is a clear ✕ to back out, instead of one unlabelled arrow in the far corner.

    • Fix

No more "Something went wrong" mid-drive

Picking up your phone while a CarPlay drive was already running could show a full-screen error. Fixed.

  129. 29 July 2026

    • Feature

Discover: a guided flyover of your metro

Tap the new ✨ button on the map and Tsamaya flies you landmark to landmark through your metro: a tilted, cinematic tour of the places worth knowing, each with its quick guide and safety tip. Pause, skip around, or tap "Take me there" to route to any stop. Any pan or pinch hands the map straight back to you.

    • Fix

Landmark badges stay put, cards read in full

Landmark badges no longer vanish behind the map's own labels as you zoom in, so they're always there to tap. Their cards now scroll: the full guide and safety tip are readable, and long captions glide across instead of being cut off.

  130. 29 July 2026

    • Feature

Discover the city: landmarks on the map

Iconic places across all seven metros now appear as small badges on the home map: Gold Reef City, Table Mountain, O.R. Tambo, the Union Buildings, Boulders Beach and dozens more. Tap a badge for a quick guide (what it is, how far, and the area's risk read at this hour), then "Take me there" to route to it. Decorative only: landmarks never change your route. Turn them off in Settings › City landmarks.

    • Tweak

      The map opens flat

The home map now always opens in a top-down view, clearer for scanning zones at a glance. Tilt with two fingers whenever you want the 3D view; the map stays at the angle you set.

  131. 29 July 2026

    • Fix

Flagged roads are no longer counted twice

Roads are stored as one row per carriageway (and a handful were accidentally saved twice), and route scoring summed every row, so a 3.1 km drive down a flagged road was counted as 6.5 km of risk, inflating its score and safety grade compared to roads stored as a single line. Every metre of a route now counts once, at the worst rating that covers it: the same way the map colours it. The 58 accidental duplicate rows were also removed from the dataset.

  132. 29 July 2026

    • Fix

Route choice ignores flagged roads you aren't on

Route scoring had the same blind spot navigation had this morning: a flagged road running right beside a safer highway (like the M1's service roads) was counted against routes that never leave the highway. The M1 past Alexandra was scored as 4.5 km of medium risk that was 100% phantom, and roads you never touch could appear in the route's caution list. The scorer now applies the same rule as the map and navigation: the road you're actually on decides. Genuinely flagged roads (including split carriageways like "Main Road (west)") still count in full.

  133. 29 July 2026

    • Fix

Safer highways stay green next to flagged roads

Highways marked as safer routes (like the M1 past Alexandra) were showing orange in navigation because flagged roads running right beside them (service roads, parallel main roads) sat close enough to bleed their risk onto the highway. The road you're actually on now wins: a verified-safer road stays green unless the flagged road is the same road you're driving. Area risk is unchanged: driving past a red zone still shows the zone and pulses the screen edge.

    • Fix

"Start Navigation" works again after cancelling a drive

Ending a drive and then starting a new route could leave the Start Navigation button doing nothing until you force-closed the app. Ending a drive quietly left the whole navigation screen alive behind the map (the system's "go home" call stopped closing screens in a recent update), and the app's guard against opening two navigation screens then blocked every new drive. Ending a drive now properly closes the screen: repeat trips start instantly, and the hidden screen no longer drains memory.

  134. 29 July 2026

    • Fix

Allowed roads keep their true colour

If you tapped "Allow" on a higher-risk road on the route screen, navigation used to paint that road neutral blue ("Unrated road"), while the map and the corridor overlay still showed it orange, which looked like the app disagreeing with itself. Allowed roads and zones now always show their real risk colour on the route ribbon, the road readout and the car screen. Allowing still does what it promised: no detours around that road and no voice or vibration nagging. It just never hides the risk any more. Manage your allowed list in Settings › Routing › Allowed roads & zones.

  135. 28 July 2026

    • Fix

      Your voice choice is remembered

Choosing voice, alerts-only or silent on the car screen now sticks: the next drive starts in the mode you left it in, instead of resetting to full voice. The phone and CarPlay buttons also stay in step: change one and the other shows the same mode.

    • Fix

Your car photo survives app updates

The custom car marker no longer disappears after a new build. The photo was always kept on your phone, but the app remembered its location in a form that broke on every update, so you had to re-upload and re-size it each time. It now finds the photo again on its own, size and all.

    • Tweak

      Route colouring is ~30× faster

The coloured safety ribbon along your route is now computed with a spatial index instead of checking every mapped road for every stretch of the route. Long cross-town routes that took ~200 ms of freeze on every reroute now take a few milliseconds, on the phone and the car screen. The colours themselves are unchanged (verified point-for-point against the old calculation).

  136. 27 July 2026

    • Fix

"Share without locations" now really does

Sharing diagnostics without locations was still including saved-place names ("Home", your work) and the ids of hotspots you drove past. It no longer does: names, place ids and every coordinate are stripped, and the timeline, timings and journey times all stay. "Share full diagnostics" is unchanged and still includes everything.

    • Tweak

The app now notices when it freezes

A heartbeat measures how late it runs, so a stall is recorded with the number of seconds it lasted instead of leaving a silent gap. Low memory is recorded too. If something goes wrong on a drive, the diagnostics you send will say what happened.

  137. 27 July 2026

    • Fix

Rerouting no longer freezes the car screen

A mid-drive reroute now has a hard time limit, and the distance and arrival time keep counting down while it works. If it takes too long, Tsamaya simply keeps you on the route you are already driving and tries again shortly: the buttons on the car screen stay live throughout.

    • Fix

      One voice at a time

When the phone and the car screen were both awake they could announce the same turn at once, in two different voices. Only one surface speaks now, and a prompt that gets cut short no longer leaves the next one waiting.

    • Fix

Home and Work from the CarPlay dashboard actually go

Tapping a dashboard shortcut now shows that it is finding your route, and tells you if something goes wrong instead of sitting there silently.

    • Fix

Ending a route ends it everywhere

Ending the drive on CarPlay used to leave the phone still showing turn-by-turn directions, so you had to end it twice. Now either one ends both.

    • Tweak

Risk data loads once and is shared

Zone and road data is now read from the on-device cache a single time and shared with every screen, so plugging in CarPlay uses what the app already has instead of loading it all over again. Faster to start and much lighter on memory.

    • Fix

The map and the readout agree on the tier

Risky roads on the home map now follow the evening and night ratings the rest of the app already used, and the route line under your car carries a flagged road right to its end, matching what the readout says.

  138. 27 July 2026

    • Fix

A flagged road stays flagged to its end

Risky roads are recorded in pieces, and those pieces can stop short of where the road actually ends. Drive past that point and the safety readout dropped to "Unrated road" while the map was still drawing the same road orange a few metres away. A road now keeps its rating across the join, so the words under the car and the colours on the map agree. It can only ever raise a warning, never lower one.

  139. 27 July 2026

    • Fix

The CarPlay dashboard map actually moves now

The small map on the CarPlay dashboard used to be a still picture that refetched itself every several seconds, so it stepped forward in jumps and could not turn with you: the arrow pointed the right way while the map underneath lagged behind. It is now a real live map that scrolls and rotates continuously, like the one on the main car screen.

    • Fix

The speedometer works in slow traffic

Anything under about 9 km/h was being treated as a dead stop, so the speed read 0 while you were crawling in traffic. The filter that ignores GPS jitter on a parked car now cuts in at walking pace instead, so real crawling speeds show.

    • Fix

No more "No known risk" on a road we haven't checked

When only the small built-in starter map was loaded (every road in it marked safe, none marked risky) the app could still tell you a road had "No known risk", or call a flagged road "Unrated". Glenhove Road, which is flagged in the live data, showed both. Whether the full risk data is really loaded is now judged from the data itself, so until it is, the app says it is still checking rather than guessing.

    • Fix

U-turn arrow points the South African way

The U-turn symbol was the right-hand-drive shape, looping to the left. In South Africa a U-turn crosses to the right, so the arrow is now mirrored to match what you actually do at the intersection.

    • Fix

      Lock-screen distance keeps up

The distance to your next turn on the lock-screen card only refreshed every 15 seconds, so it sat well behind the car. It now updates whenever the number on it would actually change.

  140. 27 July 2026

    • Tweak

Speed limit always on the CarPlay tile

The posted speed limit now stays in the corner of the CarPlay dashboard map whenever there is one to show: driving a route or just driving around. It used to appear only during navigation.

    • Fix

Every screen tells the same story

While the risk data is still downloading on a fresh install, the route screen no longer says a route "avoids known risk areas": it says the data is still loading, which is what the map and the drive were already saying. Same data, same answer, everywhere.

  141. 27 July 2026

    • Fix

Green on the map means green

The driving map was drawing Mapbox's own live-traffic lines, and their "traffic is flowing" colour is the same green Tsamaya uses for a road it has checked and rated safe, so ordinary roads with no safety rating at all could look verified. Those traffic lines are switched off on every map you tap, browse and drive with, so green there is a Tsamaya safety rating and nothing else. Traffic itself isn't lost: while you're driving, heavy and severe jams still show along your route in dark red.

    • Tweak

      A cleaner CarPlay dashboard

The mini map on the CarPlay dashboard no longer repeats the turn CarPlay is already showing. It now shows the speed limit in the top corner and a small pill under your car with the road you're on and its safety tier, and it's zoomed out a little and keeps moving smoothly instead of stalling between updates.

    • Fix

      Freeway exits are named

Turn cards used to read just "Take the ramp" when a slip road had no name of its own. They now read "Take exit 26 onto M60", using the exit number and road from the signs.

    • Fix

Honest about what we don't know yet

Straight after a fresh install, before the full risk data finishes downloading, the road tier now reads "Loading risk data…" instead of calling every road unrated, and area warnings keep working throughout. The road name under your car is more honest too: through an interchange it used to keep naming the freeway you'd already left, right next to that road's safety rating. It now reads the signposted route number off the ramp, and shows nothing rather than something stale.

  142. 26 July 2026

    • Fix

      Freeways route like freeways again

The N1, N4, N14 and the airport freeway through Joburg and Pretoria were being scored as risky roads, so routes were pushed onto slower surface streets to avoid them. About 330 km of national freeway now reads as the safe main route it is: the off-ramps and suburbs around them keep their own ratings.

    • Feature

Roads you draw get reviewed too

When you trace a road on the map, it now goes through the same AI review as every other report, and the reviewer can see what the app already knows about that spot, so it can tell a genuine gap from something already covered.

  143. 25 July 2026

    • Feature

      Send any place to Tsamaya

Got sent a location on WhatsApp, or found a place in another app? Tap Share → Tsamaya and it lands straight on your map, ready to route the safer way.

    • Fix

      CarPlay, rebuilt under the hood

Guidance keeps flowing with your phone locked in your pocket, the car screen responds faster, and turn cards draw more smoothly: a set of deep native fixes from real-drive testing.

    • Tweak

      Faster, fresher maps

The map engine jumped several versions: quicker tiles, smoother offline handling, and groundwork for richer route colours.

  144. 25 July 2026

    • Tweak

      Smarter drive diagnostics

The shareable navigation log now records CarPlay connects, map-style health, phone lock state and which screen is guiding, so field issues can be pinpointed from a single shared file.

  145. 25 July 2026

    • Fix

      CarPlay: big stability fix

Fixed the bug where plugging into CarPlay mid-drive could stack extra navigation screens (slowing everything down until the app crashed), and guidance now survives the car cancelling Apple's turn cards: the drive keeps going instead of vanishing from both screens.

    • Fix

      CarPlay map: never stuck blank

The car map now recovers by itself if the map style fails to load (bad signal at connect, or the evening style switch in a dead spot), and it runs a lighter, faster driving map built for car screens.

    • Tweak

      Cleaner CarPlay dashboard card

Our dashboard tile no longer duplicates Apple's next-turn widget. It now sticks to what Apple doesn't show: your speed, the road, its safety rating and your ETA.

  146. 24 July 2026

    • Feature

      Hey Siri, take me home

"Take me home in Tsamaya", "take me to work", "start navigation", "end navigation": Siri now works out of the box, no setup. Handy before you pull off or mid-drive.

    • Feature

      Voice waits for your calls

Navigation prompts now pause automatically the moment a phone call starts and resume when you hang up: no more directions talking over your conversation.

    • Feature

      Turns in your instrument cluster

On cars that support it, the next turn now shows behind the steering wheel: glyph, distance and road, coloured by road risk.

    • Fix

Volume slider now rules every voice

The guidance-volume slider now controls the device voice too (it previously only affected the natural voice). Diagnostics can also email support in one tap.

  147. 24 July 2026

    • Tweak

One-tap apply for drawn roads (admin)

Approving a hand-drawn road suggestion now matches it to the live road it follows and applies the rating to exactly the drawn stretch (start to end), or adds it as a brand-new road corridor when nothing matches: no manual editor work needed.

  148. 24 July 2026

    • Feature

      Draw the map you know

New pencil button on the home screen: outline an area or trace a road you know, rate how safe it is, and send it to us. The Tsamaya team and our AI reviewer check every suggestion before it changes anything: perfect for places where our street-level detail is still thin.

    • Tweak

      Natural voice by default

The natural-sounding guidance voice is now on for everyone (it was hidden behind a setting). If you're offline it falls back to the device voice automatically, and you can still switch it off in Settings → Navigation.

  149. 21 July 2026

    • Feature

      Dashboard map moves with you

The CarPlay home-screen mini-map now glides continuously as you drive instead of jumping every few seconds, matches the day/night look of the main navigation map, and wears a coloured border when you are inside a risk area. While navigating it shows your speed, the road you are on and its risk level: the next turn stays in Apple's own cards.

    • Fix

      Music un-dims reliably

A voice prompt that got cut off could leave your music quiet until the next prompt. Volume now always restores within a second or two of a prompt finishing, or being interrupted.

    • Fix

Turns name the road, not the suburb

Spoken directions like "turn left toward Hatfield" now say the actual road ("turn left onto Gordon Road") whenever the road name is known. Signposted ramps and forks still follow the signs.

    • Tweak

      Better diagnostics sharing

Share diagnostics now sends a small file covering the last 24 hours (not a month of text), including app version and settings, ready to attach to an email to admin@tsamayaapp.co.za.

  150. 20 July 2026

    • Fix

      Smoother map start-up

Risk zones and flagged roads now wait for the basemap to finish loading before they draw, instead of racing it: no more overlay glitches on launch or when the map look changes.

  151. 20 July 2026

    • Fix

CarPlay dashboard map: actually there now

The map tile on the CarPlay home screen was showing black on real cars (an iOS map-engine limitation in that window). It now draws a live mini-map that follows you as you drive, rotating with your direction, zooming with your speed, and showing your route in its live safety colour when navigating.

  152. 15 July 2026

    • Feature

      CarPlay camera thinks in km/h

The head-unit map now zooms out as you speed up (highway driving shows the road ahead, not a close-up), leans back in for turns, and glides smoothly between GPS fixes instead of stuttering.

    • Feature

Your road, on the head unit

CarPlay now names the road you are driving (with its live safety colour) in both navigation and free drive, and the car sits offset from the turn cards like the big nav apps.

    • Fix

Dashboard widget works in free drive

The CarPlay dashboard tile now shows a live map, your speed, road and area safety even when Tsamaya is not open on the car screen, and it recovers by itself after long stops.

  153. 14 July 2026

    • Fix

      Paste any Google Maps link

Shared Google Maps links (maps.app.goo.gl and friends) now paste straight in as a destination, including shares that arrive as a place name plus a link.

    • Fix

Traffic alerts out of the way

The "heavy traffic ahead" notice no longer covers the road name and its safety level while navigating.

  154. 10 July 2026

    • Feature

      Live traffic, honest ETAs

Your ETA now reflects live traffic. Jams ahead show under the route line, and you get a heads-up when heavy traffic will cost you time.

    • Feature

      Lane guidance

Lane arrows show which lane to be in for the next turn or exit, on your phone and on CarPlay.

    • Feature

      Route safety grades

Every route now carries an A to E safety grade with a plain-language reason, so comparing routes takes one glance.

    • Feature

      Beat the dark

Setting off late? Tsamaya now warns when you will arrive after dark, and how soon to leave to get in before it.

    • Feature

      Know where you are heading

The destination card now reads the area itself (like "higher-risk area at night") before you tap Go.

    • Feature

      Report what you actually see

In-drive reports now use South African incident types: hijacking, smash-and-grab, spiking, blue-light stop and more. Two taps and it is filed.

    • Feature

Home and Work at a glance

Open the app and see a live ETA to Home or Work with a route risk chip: one tap to get going.

    • Tweak

      Sharper guidance

The camera now leans in for turns and eases out on straights, and the speedo warns you before the limit drops.

    • Tweak

      How did that area feel?

After a drive through flagged areas you can say how each one felt. Every answer tunes the safety map.

  155. 9 July 2026

    • Tweak

      Speedo top-right in landscape

The speedo now sits in the top-right corner in landscape, with the buttons below it.

  156. 9 July 2026

    • Tweak

      Landscape layout, sorted

In landscape the road name and safety pill sit under the car, the car rides a little higher, and the buttons keep clear of the screen edge.

    • Tweak

      Search follows you

Destination search now favours results near where you actually are: searching in Prague finds Prague, and full street addresses abroad resolve too. At home nothing changes: South African results still come first.

    • Fix

      Tidier route panel

The "Roads on your route" chip no longer shows when there are no rated roads to list (for example outside covered metros).

  157. 9 July 2026

    • Feature

      Speed limits in free drive

The speed-limit roundel now works in free drive too: it previously only showed while navigating a route. Free drive matches your recent movement to the road you're on and reads its posted limit, wherever Mapbox has the data (including Europe).

  158. 9 July 2026

    • Fix

      Night colours back, 3D kept

Yesterday's 3D-after-dark change accidentally swapped the home map's night look away from the high-visibility night style, dimming the roads, zones and corridor colours. The night map is back to those colours, and the home screen now draws its 3D buildings on top of it, so you get both.

  159. 8 July 2026

    • Feature

      Offline maps

Download an area of the map for use without data: frame it, tap download, and it saves both the day and night looks. Your risk zones and safer corridors are already stored on your phone. Find it under Settings › Places › Offline maps. Search and routing still need a connection.

    • Fix

The map opens where you are

Opening the app away from home (another city or another country) now starts the map at your last known location instead of Johannesburg, and it no longer jumps back to Johannesburg during the day.

    • Fix

3D buildings are back after dark

The home map keeps its 3D buildings when you tilt, at any time of day. Navigation still switches to the high-contrast night map while you drive: that one is about reading the road, not the skyline.

    • Feature

      CarPlay dashboard 3D (experimental)

A new switch under Settings › Navigation renders the CarPlay dashboard widget on the full 3D map. Off by default: it uses more memory on the head unit, so try it and see how your car handles it.

  160. 8 July 2026

    • Feature

      Blue means unrated

Green now only means a road we've verified as safer. Roads we don't have safety data for show in a neutral blue during navigation and free drive (on the route line, the road readout, and CarPlay) so an unrated road is never mistaken for a verified-safe one. Yellow, orange and red still mean what they always did.

    • Fix

      Location arrow fixed

Fixed the iOS location indicator staying on after you'd finished with the app. Connecting to CarPlay no longer starts background GPS unless you're actually navigating, and any stale background location from an earlier session is now cleaned up when the app opens.

  161. 4 July 2026

    • Feature

      Works anywhere now

Tsamaya now works as a normal map and turn-by-turn navigator wherever you are, even outside our covered metros or overseas. It centres on your real location and routes you normally. The safety layer (risk zones and safe corridors) still only applies where we have data, so routes outside coverage won't avoid risk zones: the location pill shows your city tagged "(unstaged)" to make that clear.

  162. 4 July 2026

    • Tweak

      Settings, tidied up

Settings is clearer and easier to find your way around. There's a new Safety tab that gathers your risk alerts, crime hotspots and emergency contact in one place. The old "Time Band" control is gone: Tsamaya now adjusts risk automatically by the time of day, so there's nothing to set.

    • Tweak

      Risk now follows the clock

Areas are treated as higher-risk from earlier in the evening: daytime runs to 5:30pm, evening 5:30 to 7:30pm, then night until 5am. The map's evening and night look shifts at the same times, so what you see matches the risk. You can still pin the map's look under Settings › Navigation if you prefer.

  163. 4 July 2026

    • Tweak

Road colour and area alert, shown separately

While navigating, the route now shows the ROAD's own risk (a lower-risk road stays green even through a high-risk area) and the glowing screen edge shows the AREA's risk. So on a lower-risk route through a red zone you see a green road with a red screen edge: you're on the lower-risk way through, and you can still see the area is high-risk.

  164. 4 July 2026

    • Tweak

Clearer maps in the evening too

The brighter, easier-to-read night map now kicks in from the evening (not just late at night) so roads stay clear as soon as it starts getting dark.

    • Fix

Lower-risk routes still flag the most dangerous areas

On a lower-risk route through a very high-risk (red) area, the road now shows an amber "stay alert" instead of green, so a red area is never shown as completely risk-free, even on the lower-risk way through it.

  165. 4 July 2026

    • Feature

A live map on the CarPlay dashboard

The Tsamaya card on the CarPlay home screen now shows a live map that follows you (like Maps and Waze) with your turn, ETA and safety colour floating over it. It works even before you set a destination.

    • Feature

Night maps are far easier to read

In dark mode and at night, the map now uses a purpose-built night-driving style: roads are bright and clearly visible (with highway numbers) instead of the near-invisible dark grey they were before. This applies to the home map and to turn-by-turn navigation.

    • Fix

Lower-risk roads show green while you drive

A road we mark as a lower-risk way through a risky area (a lower-risk corridor, like the N3) now shows green while you navigate, instead of turning yellow or orange where it clips a flagged zone, matching how it already looks on the map.

  166. 3 July 2026

    • Tweak

Dangerous areas and dangerous roads now count equally

Safer routes now treat driving through a dangerous area as seriously as driving along a dangerous road of the same risk level. The router no longer cuts through a risky neighbourhood just to dodge a flagged road (or the other way round): when the risk is equal, the shorter route wins.

    • Feature

Risky roads are always visible while you drive

Flagged higher-risk roads around you now show as coloured lines on the map during a drive AND in free-drive (no destination set), on both the phone and CarPlay, so you can see the risk on the road you are on without needing a route.

    • Fix

      CarPlay is smoother and clearer

Starting a drive from the car screen no longer sticks on "Loading…" or shows a doubled-up ETA, and the turn banner and speed no longer overlap. When a route ends the map keeps following you in free-drive, and the CarPlay dashboard card now fits without its ETA being cut off.

    • Fix

Speed reads zero at a standstill

The speed widget now drops to 0 promptly when you stop at a light instead of lingering on a low "creeping" number.

  167. 2 July 2026

    • Feature

Guardian: one tap, someone watches over your drive

Share your Guardian link once (Settings › Navigation › Emergency contact), then tap the shield in CarPlay to let that person follow your drive live: they see your route, your live position, and the moment you arrive.

    • Feature

      CarPlay: one-tap incident reporting

The report button now opens big one-tap buttons: Police, Crash, Hazard, Robot out, Smash & grab, Hijacking. One tap sends it to the review team without leaving your drive.

  168. 2 July 2026

    • Fix

Risk data loads instantly on first run

A fresh install now uses the built-in risk snapshot immediately while the full live dataset downloads in the background: no more long "Loading risk data" wait at the start of a drive.

    • Fix

No more squashed car while panning

Panning away from the drive now flattens the map to a top-down view, so the car marker keeps its shape instead of being flattened by the 3D tilt. Re-centre returns to the chase view.

  169. 2 July 2026

    • Feature

      Tsamaya on the CarPlay dashboard

Tsamaya now provides the CarPlay home-screen navigation card: the live turn, ETA and safety colour show right on the CarPlay dashboard, with Drive home / Drive to work shortcuts. (Needs this new app version: update in TestFlight.)

    • Feature

      Search destinations from the car

A new Where to? button on the CarPlay screen lets you search any destination on the car's keyboard (plus your saved places and recent trips) and pick a Fastest / Balanced / Lower-risk route without touching your phone. Route options now show the trade-off: "Avoids 2 risk areas · +4 min".

    • Feature

      Report speed cameras from CarPlay

The report button on the car screen can now add a permanent speed camera at your spot, with the limit it enforces: same review queue as the phone. Camera and hotspot voice alerts now play on CarPlay drives too.

    • Fix

Drives end themselves at the destination

A drive started from the car screen now ends itself when you arrive and stop: the map stays live with your safety colour, like a normal drive around town.

    • Fix

      Lighter on long drives

Fixed the remaining memory growth when the route recalculates: long drives with lots of rerouting now stay smooth on phone and CarPlay.

  170. 1 July 2026

    • Fix

      Smoother, cleaner CarPlay

On CarPlay the map now glides continuously as you drive, instead of the car jumping forward once a second (and it rides on the road using the smooth route heading, not the jittery GPS one). The turn, ETA, safety and speed panels are now Tsamaya's own, arranged to stay clear of the car's built-in controls.

    • Fix

Your car stays the right size

The vehicle marker now keeps a consistent size when you rotate to landscape or pan around the map: no more oversized car in landscape, and it no longer shrinks when you pan away to look ahead.

    • Fix

CarPlay safety colours match the map

On CarPlay, the route's safety colours now follow the map's day / evening / night lighting like the phone does, so an amber or red stretch reads clearly instead of looking washed-out on a dark evening map.

    • Fix

      More accurate danger-zone edges

Zones drawn with a carved-out area (large farms or mines with an excluded patch) no longer treat that excluded patch as risky: the live safety readout now matches the exact zone shape shown on the map.

  171. 1 July 2026

    • Fix

      Lighter on long drives

Navigation now uses noticeably less memory while you drive, so a long trip stays smooth instead of slowing down or closing on you.

  172. 1 July 2026

    • Fix

      Smoother, freeze-free guidance

Navigation no longer briefly freezes when a voice prompt plays over Bluetooth or CarPlay, and guidance no longer falls behind and then fires a burst of turns at the intersection: you hear just the current instruction, on time.

    • Fix

      Safety colours line up

The route line, the safety card and the screen-edge alert now always agree: an amber or red stretch shows the same everywhere, instead of a green road under an amber warning. The pulse only appears for genuine higher-risk areas.

    • Fix

      Clearer turn wording

Roundabouts now read "At the roundabout, take the 1st exit", and arrival reads "Arrive at your destination": no more jumbled instruction text in the banner.

  173. 30 June 2026

    • Fix

No more "Dropped pin" as your road

During a free drive, if we can't name the exact road you're on, the readout now keeps the last known road (or just shows the safety status) instead of labelling it "Dropped pin".

  174. 30 June 2026

    • Fix

Never shows "safe" before risk data loads

If the risk data hasn't loaded yet (e.g. just after opening on a weak connection), the driving screen now shows a neutral "Loading risk data" state instead of a green "No known risk", so you're never told an area is safe when we simply don't have the data yet.

    • Fix

      Map always loads

If the map is slow or fails to load on a cold start, your route and car now appear anyway instead of a blank screen.

    • Feature

      Crash reporting

If the app closes unexpectedly, Settings › General › Help & Feedback now offers to share what led up to it (locations removed) so we can fix it fast.

  175. 30 June 2026

    • Fix

Drive opens centred on the route

When you start navigating, the camera now opens framed on the start of your route instead of off to the side: no need to pan and re-centre first.

    • Tweak

Brighter route colour on dark maps

The live route line is a little brighter and clearer on the Evening and Dark maps.

  176. 30 June 2026

    • Fix

      Navigation starts where you are

If a route was built before your GPS had fully settled, navigation now re-anchors the start onto your real location instead of beginning elsewhere.

    • Fix

Route preview matches your map lighting

The route comparison screen now follows your Map lighting (Light / Evening / Dark) instead of always showing a light map.

    • Tweak

      Brighter colours on dark maps

Risk zones, roads and the live route now show clearer, brighter colours on the Evening and Dark maps so they no longer read muddy.

  177. 30 June 2026

    • Tweak

      Voice volume slider

The guidance-voice volume is now a smooth slider (Settings › Navigation) instead of fixed steps, and quick changes no longer play two clips at once.

    • Tweak

      Size your own car marker

Uploading a photo of your car now keeps the whole image (no forced crop), with a Marker-size slider to fit it to the map. Your car also stays on screen when you pan the map during a drive, instead of switching to an arrow.

    • Fix

      Clearer Evening & Dark maps

Risk zones and roads now read clearly on the Evening and Dark map styles, and switching the map lighting mid-drive no longer hides the car or route.

    • Fix

      Tidier driving screen

The Re-centre button no longer overlaps the road name when you pan, and the safety readout now reflects the area you're in, not just the road.

  178. 30 June 2026

    • Tweak

CarPlay: map or directions on your phone

While CarPlay is driving, tap Map / Directions on your phone to switch between the live map and the turn-by-turn list.

  179. 30 June 2026

    • Feature

      Choose your map lighting

Settings › Map & graphics › Map lighting now lets you keep the map matched to the time of day (Auto), or lock it to Light, Evening or Dark.

  180. 30 June 2026

    • Tweak

      CarPlay refinements

On CarPlay: the speedometer (with the posted speed limit) now shows, the arrival card names your destination, distances read like Apple Maps (5 km / 600 m / 50 m), and your phone opens turn-by-turn directions automatically when a CarPlay drive begins.

  181. 30 June 2026

    • Feature

      A richer, time-of-day map

The map now uses Mapbox Standard with 3D buildings and lighting that shifts with the time of day: daylight, dusk and night. Phone feeling slow? Settings › Map & graphics has High / Balanced / Lite: Lite is the fast, flat map.

    • Feature

      Tsamaya on CarPlay

Plug into a CarPlay car and Tsamaya guides you on the dashboard screen: the safer route, turn-by-turn, with your phone out of sight.

    • Feature

Keeps guiding with the screen off

Navigation now continues when your phone is locked or in your pocket: directions, voice and rerouting carry on in the background until you arrive.

    • Feature

More ways to make it yours

Use a photo of your own car as the map marker, rotate the navigation screen to landscape, and set the guidance voice volume: all in Settings.

  182. 29 June 2026

    • Feature

      Your route, coloured by safety

The route line now shows where it's safer and where it isn't (green along safer stretches, amber and red where it passes through higher-risk areas) so you can see the risk ahead at a glance instead of one colour for the whole trip.

    • Feature

      Clearer voice directions

Guidance now names your next move earlier ("In 2 kilometres, take exit 10" instead of just "continue") and tells you which side your destination is on as you arrive.

    • Feature

      A safer-arrival summary

When you arrive, Tsamaya shows how many higher-risk areas your route steered you clear of: a quick note that the safer way was worth it.

  183. 28 June 2026

    • Feature

      Recent destinations

Tap "Where to?" and your recent places pop up straight away, so your regular trips are one tap from a route. They're kept on your phone only.

    • Fix

      Calmer, clearer guidance

Navigation no longer re-routes while you're parked or after you've arrived, and voice prompts now wait their turn instead of talking over each other. Your destination shows a pin on the map, and arriving ends the drive cleanly.

    • Fix

      Speedometer fixes

The speed dial turns red the moment you're over the limit (even by 1 km/h), and snaps back to zero promptly when you stop instead of lingering.

    • Tweak

      Sharing polish

The share sheet opens instantly, and if you re-route mid-trip, anyone following your live link now sees your updated route.

  184. 28 June 2026

    • Feature

A quick tour of the buttons

The first time you open the home, route and navigation screens, a short spotlight tour points out the key buttons: search, saved places, risk overlays, sharing, reporting and the SOS button. Replay it any time from Settings › Help › "Show me around".

  185. 28 June 2026

    • Feature

      Support Tsamaya

Settings now has a "Support Tsamaya" option that opens our website if you'd like to help keep safer routing free. There's never any pressure, and nothing is collected inside the app.

  186. 28 June 2026

    • Feature

SOS now shares a live emergency link

Pressing SOS while driving texts your emergency contact your coordinates AND a "track me live" link they can follow for 24 hours. It's location-only (no destination needed), keeps updating while you drive, and you can stop it any time, from the SOS button or a banner on the home screen.

    • Fix

      Faster, smoother startup

The map's risk overlays now load just after the app opens instead of during launch, fixing a brief freeze on startup (most noticeable in Low Power Mode).

    • Tweak

Clearer risk info + tidier navigation

Ending a route returns you to the map. Risk labels are colour-based again (yellow = lower risk), tapping a zone explains it in plain language ("frequent reports of …") instead of technical wording, and the in-drive buttons sit in a tighter group.

  187. 27 June 2026

    • Fix

Shared trip links open straight in the app

Tap a shared Tsamaya link (a live trip, or a place someone sent you) and it now opens reliably inside the app, even when Tsamaya wasn't already running. Before, a cold tap could land on a blank "unmatched" screen, and a live trip could briefly open over the wrong part of the world.

    • Tweak

Clearer map: areas we haven't rated yet

The map legend now spells out that a blank patch means "no risk data here yet", not "assessed and safe." A blank map is never a safety guarantee, so stay alert in unrated areas. Coverage keeps growing.

  188. 27 June 2026

    • Feature

      Share your drive, live

During navigation, tap Share › Share live location to send someone a link to your trip. They can follow your route and live position, see your ETA, and get an "Arrived safely" when you get there. It opens right in Tsamaya for anyone who has the app, or on the web for everyone else.

    • Tweak

Live links close when you arrive

A shared trip link stops updating and shows that you've arrived once you reach your destination, then closes shortly after, so it can't be used to track you later.

  189. 27 June 2026

    • Feature

See why a road or area is flagged

The route screen now shows the reason behind each flagged zone or road (the local context we hold) so you can judge a detour for yourself, not just trust a colour.

    • Fix

Emergency contact is no longer hidden by the keyboard

Adding your SOS contact in Settings now scrolls the fields above the keyboard so you can see what you type. We'll also remind you if a contact is missing its phone number.

    • Fix

      Clearer turn directions

Fixed a turn instruction that could read twice ("Keep right toward Keep right…"), and the re-centre button now sits next to the road name instead of floating mid-screen.

    • Tweak

A friendlier map and clearer wording

Dropped pins read as "Dropped pin" instead of raw coordinates, the route options use clearer "Lower-risk" wording, and the From/To card no longer overlaps the map buttons while you plan.

    • Tweak

      Better VoiceOver support

The map and navigation buttons now describe themselves to screen readers, with larger tap targets.

  190. 27 June 2026

    • Tweak

      Lighter, faster map loading

Tsamaya now keeps your downloaded risk-zone and safe-corridor data between sessions and only re-fetches it when something has actually changed, so the map loads quicker and uses less mobile data each time you open the app.

    • Fix

      Clear heads-up outside covered areas

Pick a destination outside Tsamaya's covered metros and we now tell you plainly that the route is shown without risk avoidance, instead of quietly handing you an ordinary route.

    • Tweak

      Opt out of usage data

Settings › Privacy now has a "Share anonymous usage data" switch, so you can turn off the coarse, anonymous usage stats whenever you like.

    • Tweak

      Privacy policy updated

Our privacy policy now spells out exactly what optional live-trip sharing stores, and that you can have a shared trip deleted on request.

  191. 26 June 2026

      Crime hotspots on the map

Known hijacking and smash-and-grab spots now show as marked points with a risk circle, and you'll get a spoken heads-up as you approach one while navigating. They're NOT a complete list: coverage is growing and we're still tightening exact locations. Turn them on or off in Settings › Navigation › Crime hotspots.

    • Feature

      Help place a hotspot correctly

Tap a hotspot, choose "Wrong spot?", then tap its true location on the map to send a correction to our team for review.

    • Feature

      More "Nearby" places

Nearby now also finds restaurants and tourist attractions, dropped as map pins with their star rating and whether they're open now.

    • Feature

      Add a speed camera's limit

Tap a speed camera on the map to suggest its speed limit: handy for the Johannesburg cameras imported without one. Our team reviews each suggestion.

    • Feature

      Share a navigation log

From Settings › General you can share a navigation log for diagnostics, with an option to trim the start and end so your home or work address stays private.

    • Fix

Hotspots line up with the road

Every hotspot was snapped to its real intersection or off-ramp using map road data, so the markers now sit where they belong instead of nearby.

    • Tweak

      Clearer risk-area alerts

Driving into a large higher-risk area now simply says "entering a higher-risk area." The specific "hijacking / smash-and-grab" callout is reserved for the precise hotspot points.

    • Tweak

      Tidier "Nearby" pins

The "Clear pins" button moved below the quick actions so it no longer hides behind the search bar.

    • Fix

      More reliable live location sharing

When you share your live location, the app now confirms the link is working before you send it, and "arrived safely" reliably shows when you finish your drive.

    • Fix

      Voice directions on time

Spoken turn-by-turn now arrives on time even on a weak signal: if the natural voice can't load quickly, it falls back to the on-device voice instead of going quiet.

    • Fix

      Navigation arrow rides the road

The vehicle arrow now sits centred on your road instead of drifting off to the side.

    • Tweak

      Fixes & improvements

Added a "Check for app updates" button in Settings › General, sped up map-data loading, and stopped the "What's New" card from repeating itself.

    • Feature

Flag a route that looks wrong

On the route screen, tap "Something off with this route? Send it to the team" to send us the proposed route and a note, so we can look into it.

    • Tweak

      Clearer route options

Each route's dot now matches its colour on the map (Standard grey, Balanced green, Lower-risk blue). And when two options are the same road, we say so instead of quietly hiding one.

    • Feature

      Never miss an update

You'll now see a "What's New" card after every update, and you can revisit the full history any time in Settings › General › What's New.

    • Feature

Pick your route: Standard, Balanced or Lower-risk

Every trip now offers three routes: Standard (fastest), Balanced (avoids high-risk areas) and Lower-risk (avoids high + medium-risk). Choose per trip, or set a default in Settings › Default route.

    • Feature

      Share your live location

From the navigation screen you can now share a live, trackable link so family can follow your drive in real time and see when you've arrived safely.

    • Feature

      Find places nearby

Tap "Nearby" on the home screen to find the closest police station, hospital, fuel stop or mall and route straight there.

    • Feature

      Safety nudges + SOS

Optional in-drive heads-ups for hijack / smash-and-grab hotspots, peak-risk times and arrival, plus an SOS button that alerts a chosen contact. Manage them in Settings › Safety.

    • Feature

Report speed cameras as you drive

Tap the report button while navigating to add a permanent speed camera at your spot. Our team reviews it, and it's added automatically once a few drivers flag the same place.

    • Feature

      Share your trip with family

Sharing a route now tells a friend where you're driving from and to, your ETA, and any higher-risk areas you pass, so someone can keep an eye on your drive.

    • Feature

      Speed cameras on the map

Known fixed speed cameras now show on the map, with a spoken "speed camera ahead" heads-up while you're navigating. Turn it on or off in Settings › Navigation. (Coverage is best in Cape Town and still growing elsewhere.)
